Although we find ourselves more often on the city side of the railway, we find the quirky streets of Northbridge hard to resist – especially when there are so many secrets to uncover!

Opening at the end of July, the teeny-tiny Giant Coffee is tucked away down Northbridge’s Nicks Lane. The laneway, also home to a certain late-night prohibition-themed joint, is the connecting vein between Chinatown, Old Shanghai, James Street and Roe Street – hidden away and yet totally in the centre of things.

The itty-bitty café is helmed by former Howard’s Groove barista Claire Kim, a very adept latte artist and true coffee aficionado.

The cute fit out has more than a touch of retro charm, with sleek timber cabinetry offset by pops of green – if you love the vibes of Howard’s Groove and Smooth Operator, it’s a safe bet that you’ll love Giant.

On the beans, you’ll see local roaster Daylight well represented, as is Twin Peaks on the single origins. As well as your classic offering of milky, espresso and batch brews, we were also excited to see einspanner on offer: a decadent Viennese classic of coffee topped with whipped cream.

Also on the decadent front: some truly enticing pastries available most days, alongside bagels and more snacks to come.
