Mount Lawley has its ups and downs, but our love for the hip and happening suburb is unrelenting. Here are nine of our favourite spots to grab a coffee in Mount Lawley (ok, we admit, a couple are technically in Highgate).

Modus Coffee

Since opening the doors to their Mount Lawley store at the tail end of 2016, Modus have really set the standard to what exciting things a teeny tiny coffee shop can do. From their steadfast commitment to quality coffee, their ethical roasting operation, their sustainable practices, to their refined food offerings, to their collaborations with other top local producers…it was only a matter of time before they had to take it to another level. If their expansion into two more locations means we can get our mitts on their coffee all the more easily, we’re on board – but the Mount Lawley original will always have our heart.

Bossman

Nestled away down Arcade 669, it would be easy to forget about Bossman – if it wasn’t so damn good. Pocket sized, their focus is on delivering quality coffee; made using their own Twin Peaks blend, it’s worth going out of your way for. While the interior is dimly lit, the service is bright – sweetened by a locally-baked Greek treat to accompany your coffee, of course.

3/669 Beaufort Street

Soho Lane

Obviously looks aren’t everything but boy, it adds a certain something. Soho Lane is the newest hunk in town, and we’ve got a bit of a crush. As well as serving up killer coffees with locally roasted Micrology beans, their all-day brunch game is next-level. Star players include an ox tongue pastrami bagel, diner-style pancakes, or a golden, glistening fried chicken burger. We’re blushing!

Standby Espresso

While there’s a lot of jokes to be made about millennials and their avocado toast, obviously there’s something to be said for a quick coffee on the go – that is, if the number of takeaway coffee windows is anything to go by. Standby Espresso is here to keep you fuelled up in a flash, with Toby’s Estate coffee and crowd-pleasing toasties from Toastface Grillah.

1 Raglan Road

Daily Dose

Coffee window case in point: Daily Dose. In spite of its limited size, Daily Dose has been gaining a fervent following with their friendly service, takeaway coffees and legendary toasties. These guys really prove that you don’t have to complicate things, you just have to be good.

The Deli on Central

An espresso bar started by a property developer? It hardly fills you with inspiration… unless that developer is Tim Willing. After their success in Guildford, Willing has expanded to their sister store, the Deli on Central. This second outpost has a similarly chic, European-inspired fit out and, of course, a stellar coffee game. Positioned on the corner of Central Avenue and Clifton Crescent, the Deli brings all of Willing’s winning elements and adds an Australian neighbourhood corner shop nostalgia. Who’s buying this round of icey poles?

Lincoln’s 102

Tucked away off Beaufort Street, Lincoln’s 102 feels like a neighbourhood institution. Welcoming families and four-legged friends, the unpretentious cafe is serving up a relaxed, homestyle menu; with favourites like shakshuka, blue swimmer crab omelette, or an eggs benny that’ll fix any hangover. Most importantly? They’ll hook you up with a quality coffee to match.

102 Lincoln Street

Chu Bakery

The almost-constant line out the door will attest to the fact that Chu has been killing it since opening their William Street bakery in 2015. You need to be an early bird to be sure to get one of their amazing loaves of bread, but luckily, their picture-perfect pastries, loaded toasts and donuts are equally delish – but even without those, Chu would be worth a visit just for their coffee. (Best enjoyed laying on the grass in Hyde Park, soaking up the sunshine.)

498 William Street

Mary Street Bakery

It’s easy to feel cynical about the ever expanding Mary Street Bakery empire, but as we’ve already made clear in countless articles – they’re just too good at what they do. Whether they’re slinging some of our favourite coffees, or sandwiches (or sausage rolls, or donuts…), they consistently deliver on quality. A visit to their original, actually-on-Mary-Street store is never amiss, with beans by their own off-site roaster Offshoot (and a pastry on the side, if we’re honest with ourselves).
