Back when Perth Is OK! first started, one of the first weird little hidden places around Perth that blew up thanks to Instagram was the Gwelup Secret Garden.

Initially its location was shrouded in mystery; we even remember having only longitudinal and latitudinal coordinates to find the bloody place!

Of course over the years word spread, its location became very well known and it became a haven for Instagram photo-chasers, along with photographers trying to capture that golden hour shot amongst the magical-looking setting.

We say magical-looking because the main reason it is so densely green and mysterious is due to dominant Morning Glory weeds taking over that area of the Careniup Wetlands Reserve.

Over the course of last year the reserve was shut down by the council several times due to high traffic causing a high amount of damage and rubbish left over in the area, along with annoying the local residents.

And those shutdowns will become permanent over the next few years, as the local council recently voted unanimously to remove the weeds over the next three years.

While it’s a sad end to a fun little nook of Perth, City of Stirling plans to turn the garden into a conservation area as part of the Careniup wetlands reserve management plan is probably a much better long term decision for the area.
