It was a weird old year 2021, and while 2022 is off to a rocky start nothing helps you face the day like a fresh cup of joe and tasty breakfast treat. Below you’ll find 13 new favourites of ours that have opened up around Perth and beyond in the last six or so months that are serving up plenty of the good stuff:
Peggy’s
There was no greater cause for excitement in the Perth is OK offices in 2021 than the opening of Peggy’s – just about every time we went for a sneaky sandwich we’d end up bumping into each other. This writer is a particular sucker for a sausage and egg muffin, but some of our colleagues may never recover from the disappearance of the Cubano. We said it was sure to be something special, and in the months since opening we’ve been able to happily stand by that prediction (hot tip: they also do some of the best hot chippies in town).
35 Market Street, Fremantle
Micrology Coffee Roasters
Supplying some of Perth’s best cafe’s for yonks, Micrology has built a reputation for being one of the best of the best. Luckily, the local roaster has made it even easier to get your hands on their delicious brews, with a schmick roastery, cafe and retail space opening in Osborne Park in September of 2021.
58 Collingwood Street, Osborne Park
Community Coffee Co.
Having quickly won over hearts and minds with their Subiaco roastery and espresso bar, Community Coffee Co. has seen a huge expansion over the last two years – with their CBD espresso bar opening in 2020, and then a larger cafe in 2021. Tucked away down Mercantile Lane, the sleek cafe is serving up coffees and conti rolls that’ll make any lunch break a little bit brighter.
Mercantile Lane, 177 St Georges Terrace, Perth
Folk & Merchant
Taking over the former Mr Herbert’s site, Folk & Merchant have been keeping the community vibes going strong. Pop by the coffee window for a quick coffee on the go, or head inside to peruse the local wares on offer – including owner Laura Fletcher’s own kids clothing label, Lucie June.
4/243 Herbert Street, Doubleview
Duncan Street Store
From the same culinary mind behind beloved food truck Soul Provider, Duncan Street Store is bringing big vibes to Vic Park’s more residential side. The former corner store is where you’ll find not only great coffee, but some next-level lunches and perhaps the only place in Perth you’ll find Jamaican beef patties. We’re most excited about West Indian Wednesdays though: one night a week, Duncan Street Store serves up their signature mix of soul food, with a distinctly Caribbean flavour.
41 Duncan Street, Victoria Park
Kin Coffee
Opening at the end of September 2021, Kin Coffee has become a fast favourite. Specialty coffee is care of local roasters and verified coffee nerds Blacklist, while small plates and pastries take care of any hunger pangs – all in a delightful, light and bright setting.
Unit 8 and 9, 333 Oxford Street, Leederville
Abacus Espresso
Leederville’s new Electric Lane precinct is pretty darn exciting, and right at the centre of it is Abacus Espresso. It’s got a dreamy, Scandi-inspired, terracotta-y fit out and even better coffee, courtesy of a selection of local roasters like Double Double and Fiori.
10 Electric Lane, Leederville
Lady Annie
Bossman has been consistently serving up some of Perth’s absolute best coffee for yonks, so the addition of another cafe just across the road is certainly cause for at least a little excitement. Lady Annie opened in November, and has more than lived up to quality of her big sister.
4/672 Beaufort Street, Mount Lawley
Ol’ Buoy
Cottesloe may boast a lot of things, but it was sorely lacking a kiosk suitable for such a world-class beach. Helmed by the teams from Daisies and Some-day, Ol’ Buoy is sorting out your next beach trip with some killer coffee and perfect post-swim bites – think calamari baguettes, fish and chips and refreshing açai bowls. Much like their upstairs neighbour Indigo Oscar, these guys are slated to only be here for the summer – although we’re keeping our fingers crossed that they might stick around a little longer.
Viaje
With another outpost in South Perth, Viaje expanded their offerings in 2021 to include another cafe in Mount Lawley. Great coffee, inventive eats, cute pink exterior? What’s not to love?
Shop 8/609 Beaufort Street, Mount Lawley
Zonts Bakehouse
Earning legions of followers with their cult-favourite underground bakery Backdoor Bakehouse, it was only a matter of time until the crew expanded to a brick and mortar operation. And thus, Zonts Bakehouse was born, moving from Subiaco into their new Northbridge digs in October. That golden, flaky pastry is pretty mesmerising on its own, but the flavour combos absolutely take things to the next level – like croissants topped with everything bagel seasoning and filled with cream cheese, or stuffed with bacon, kimchi and stracciatella. Those with a sweet tooth with be more than looked after, with flavours like blood orange and pink grapefruit curd, or danishes filled with matcha, cheese and yuzu meringue.
Unit 2, 228 James Street, Northbridge
Eggspot
On a rough morning, an egg sandwich will always hit the spot – but we could weep with joy to behold an Eggspot sandwich. Eggspot has been dishing up their signature fluffy egg sandwiches from Freo Markets for years, creating hangover-blasting combinations like pulled pork, crispy fried chicken, hash brown stack and even a big breakfast sandwich – and now northsiders can get in on the action at their Angove Street location.
40/10 Angove Street, North Perth
Cafe Pastel
If you’re just gonna do one thing, you’ve really got to make sure you do it well – and luckily, Cafe Pastel are pretty damn good at pastéis de nata. Baked every 15 minutes, these little treats boast crispy, caramelised, oh-so-flaky pastry bases and unctuously creamy custard filling. Alongside a coffee, they’re just about impossible to resist.
