When it comes to fishing – Perth isn’t OK…. Perth is amazing! With the Indian Ocean on your doorstep and the Swan River snaking its way up past the city, Perth has so many great fishing options that I just don’t know where to start. I’ve got plenty of favourite fishing haunts from my many times visiting the West, one of my memorable fishing experiences ever was actually off a Perth beach just last month – but I’m going to save that till the very end so keep on reading!

Mosman Bay, Mosman Park

Being one of the deeper parts of the Swan River this area boasts plentiful hauls of delicious Blue Swimmer Crabs during the warmer months, great sized prawns for those brave enough to dive at night and is home to some XXL mystical Mulloway for those lucky enough to land them!

North and South Mole, Fremantle

The one stop shop for all your bread and butter fishing needs, whether it be skippy, herring, garfish or squid. It’s also a great place to target Australian Salmon when the schools are running or land yourself a big Pink Snapper when those cold Nor-Westers blow!

Best Fishing Perth

West End, Rottnest Island

With the nutritious Leeuwin current pumping around this area it’s no wonder the fishing goes off. I prefer dawn and dusk, anchoring in anywhere from 12-20m and getting a good burly trail going, unweighted fresh W.A pilchards are key. It won’t be long until your rods are screaming! Yellow Tail Kingfish, Pink Snapper, Samson fish, Spanish Mackeral, Baldchin Gropers, Dhufish – the list goes on!

Trigg Point, Trigg

Nothing gets the heart pumping like a surface strike. Targeting any sand holes or white water behind the reefs from Trigg Point to Hillarys is a great way to land yourself some good tailor. Use shiny surface or sub surface lures that make some noise and push some wake. If lures aren’t your thing try lobbing out unweighted gars or pilchards on ganged hooks. Be sure to set your drag because there are some big fish up there!

Drone Fishing, Northern Perth Beaches

So get this – MONSTER Pink Snapper…. land based! I was lucky enough to fish with Robbie Riches (owner and operator of Perth Fishing Safari’s) last month one hour north of Perth. The method we used was crazy and a first for me in my 35 plus years of fishing – we used a drone! Robbie flew our baits out 200-300m from shore and dropped them on specific bits of reef and rubble that he could see using the birds eye view. By mid afternoon we had landed and successfully released four big Pink Snapper to 7.5kg, not to mention the countless big fish we got busted off by. Don’t believe me? Need proof?
