Chim chim cher-ee! Have you got your tickets to Mary Poppins yet?

The practically perfect musical is arriving at Crown Theatre this week – and to get into the supercalifragilistic spirit of things, we’re hitting up some venues around Perth that channel the London charm of Cherry Tree Lane.

Mayfair Lane

Amongst the leafy Plane Tree-lined streets of West Perth, Mayfair Lane is inspired by the best of the British gastropub. A timeless approach blends tradition with a contemporary attitude and a menu that favours old-school classics done well – and some cocktails that would tempt even the most perfect nanny.

Last Drop Elizabethan

You can’t get much more English than the Last Drop Elizabethan! A whimsical little slice of Olde England, this family-run Tudor-inspired pub has been loved by locals for over 25 years, and it’s the ideal spot to warm up by the fire with a hearty pub feed on those chilly autumn afternoons or soak up the sun from their village green with a pint from the Lizzie’s own microbrewery.

Bertie

Wine bar Bertie – helmed by British-born Basso locals veteran bartender James Connolly and Head Chef Anthony Yuill – has quickly won us over with their British-leaning gastropub fare. A Scotch egg that made our dreams come true, a refined take on steak and onions and a quick jaunt across the Atlantic for a contemporary Waldorf salad: we’re strongly considering a move into the neighbourhood.

77 Old Perth Road, Bassendean

Epicurean

Immerse yourself in all things Mary Poppins with Epicurean’s special edition afternoon tea. On your best behaviour with excellent etiquette, of course, enjoy dainty sweets and savouries – like “Feed the Birds” Scottish shortbread, “A Spoonful of Sugar” lemon meringue tart and Mrs Brill’s mini smoked salmon bagels, alongside flowing tea and coffee, and a sparkling wine on arrival for grownups.

Mrs Rabbit

Devonshire tea in the picturesque surrounds of the Swan Valley? In a charming ’50s cottage? Sign us up! Mrs Rabbit Tearooms are serving up some of the fluffiest, freshest scones, and have some extra-cute high teas available – for well-behaved little rabbits six years and older.

Mechanics Institute

While it may not be quite so English, any chipper chimney sweep would happily hop, skip and jump across Northbridge’s rooftops to find themselves relaxing with a cheeky drink at Mechanics Institute. One of Perth’s OG small bars, it’s the perfect spot for an afternoon tipple whether you’re sinking a pint or two or delving into their impressive cocktail-making capabilities.

Wolf Lane

Another one of Perth’s small bar originals, wind your way down back streets and alleys to find the whimsical Wolf Lane. Filled floor-to-ceiling with weird, wonderful, curious and curiouser décor, it’s an intoxicating mix of imaginative sips and cosy nooks perfect for a cosy date night or intimate catchup with close pals – you’ll feel transported to a magical world where the sun shines bright!
