If you’re planning to meet your vegetarian friend for a night out, but can’t find a spot where you can both enjoy the food, then these Fremantle pubs are the answer. Our list could also help if you’re a vegetarian or vegan, and are sick of not being able to enjoy a hearty pub meal anymore. With our picks, the carnivores will be satisfied with smoked meats and a variety of seafood, while the vegos won’t be secretly wishing they stayed at home with a bowl of pasta. Freo is the ideal place for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike, with a range of historical pubs, seaside vibes, and excellent craft beers to pair with your pub grub.

Norfolk Hotel

The Norfolk is a much-loved spot for a night out in Fremantle, it’s in a lovely historic building, and manages to mix the feeling of a cosy English pub with a classic, leafy Australian beer garden. Luckily, this Freo hotspot offers a couple of great vegetarian and vegan options – they do have the basic Beyond Burger, but we swear, it’s actually a solid veggie burger compared to other pubs – and they also offer something rare…a vegan pizza (check the photo below for proof)!

Norfolk Hotel Vegetarian Pizza

For once, a pub that advertises its fancy stone fired pizzas actually has a tasty vegan option as well as a cheesy margherita. Not only that, but the Norfolk has starters and share plates like smoked cauliflower popcorn, spiced zucchini and carrot fritters, and a cheese-heavy vegetarian grazing board with an intriguing vegan option.

South Beach Hotel

The South Beach Hotel is the quintessential chilled South Fremantle hang out. With its beachy, casual feel (even the building is painted a cheerful golden yellow), it’s the perfect place to warm up after winter-time surfing, or visit for a cooling pint on a hot summer day. Basically, if a pub offers more than just the obligatory veggie burger, then they’re a hidden gem, and the SBH exceeds expectations with a heavenly, creamy vegan artichoke and asparagus risotto with truffle oil.

The pub caters to vegetarians generously, with a grilled pesto halloumi burger, and a roasted artichoke and pumpkin pizza, and they include a couple of vegan starters like the mushroom spring rolls and black bean and tofu chilli. There’s also a salad, but let’s face it, that’s not what you’re craving for a pub meal.

Sail & Anchor

This pub is a staple of Fremantle and any day of the week, rain or shine, it’s packed with locals. The Sail & Anchor doesn’t have as many options as some of our other suggestions, but it makes up for this with what their main option is – a vegan parmigiana! One of the disappointments of being a vegan/vegetarian, is that you can’t enjoy a lot of classic Aussie meals anymore, and the Sail & Anchor has answered this wish with a super tasty replacement.

Sail And Anchor Vego

It’s a cauliflower schnitty, with vegan cheese, the delish tomato sauce, and a hefty serving of chips. There’s also a roasted cauliflower salad, which seems like a decent dish (if a bit healthy) with the addition of hummus and chickpeas, and some nibbles like charred broccolini and guacamole and chips.

Running With Thieves

Running With Thieves is an unpretentious, casual brewery, owned and operated by a band of passionate locals – and it has definitely earned its place on our list. They have a prime Freo spot – right across from South Beach – and their design is industrial and open plan, with beer barrels and brewing facilities on display. The perfect foods to pair with nice, ice-cold pints of ale are generous portions of shared snacks – and this brewery offers an eclectic variety, including multiple vegetarian options.

Running With Thieves

They have vego share plates like patatas bravas, cauliflower bites with buffalo sauce, seasonal greens with yuzu dressing, and buffalo cauliflower sliders – the team were even thoughtful enough to put vegan soy mayo with the chips! But it doesn’t stop there, they also have individual meals like buffalo cauliflower bowls, with apple slaw, rice, quinoa and pickles.

Editor’s Pick:

Percy Flint’s

No list about Freo booze and food would be complete with our perennial fave, Percy Flint, and we’re pleased to report that the sunniest little courtyard in South Freo holds their own when it comes to vego and vegan options on the food menu. When it comes to larger options there’s a little old (v) next to two out of four dishes – a roasted cauliflower salad and vegetarian burger with beetroot pattie, but it’s the share plates that really shine. Chilli cheese fries, corn fritters with chipotle and/or a Caprese salad to go with staples like chips and bread (from North Street, of course).
