We’ve spent plenty of time waiting at the lights on the corner of Scarborough Beach Road and Loftus Street, thinking to ourselves: “That motorbike shop on the corner… That would make a great coffee window…”

And this week we’re feeling quietly rather satisfied with ourselves, with the addition of Hank’s Corner proving us well and truly correct (with the exception that the store is actually motorcycle repair and tyre shop, but we’ll still claim it).

The low-key spot has immediately become a favourite for locals, keeping them fuelled with specialty coffee and a curated selection of snacks – which is due to expand as they get into the swing of things.

“My concept for the place is more of an upmarket lunch bar than another à la carte cafe,” owner Henry Bristow tells us. “So expect some soft rolls and choc milks, as well as specialty coffee from Darkstar and lots of quirky touches. Really just a fun, comfortable, community vibe.”

For the moment, you can indulge in classic sausage rolls, a temptingly gooey Welsh rarebit (a kind of fancy cheese on toast, if you’re not familiar), a kimchi, tuna and gochujang-loaded toast, brekkie frittatas or some picture-perfect, freshly-baked, chewy cookies.

You don’t need to wait to enjoy the community vibes though. While we’re enjoying our coffee, both owner Henry and barista Elsie are seemingly pals with everyone that comes through the door – if not when they enter, they certainly are by the time they leave.

The space, previously used to house the spare tyres of the adjoining Bike Doctor (before that, it was originally a deli) has kept its charm, with plenty of pleasant surprises getting uncovered during its renovations: including striking emerald-green tiles on the exterior and an unmissable “WITCH SOAP” mural behind the counter. Newer features, including the counter, have been made using recycled and reclaimed wood – with Henry undertaking much of the fit-out himself. In the corner, a kid’s play area keeps little ones entertained while parents get some much-needed caffeine.

“We tried not to mess with the original building too much, which has resulted is a space that people really seem to enjoy being in.”

Hank’s Corner is located at 64A Scarborough Beach Road, North Perth, and is open Monday to Friday 6:00AM to 2:00PM, and Saturdays 6:00AM to 11:30AM.
