We’ve been staring longingly at our friends’ Instagram stories as they frolic through Italy, and frankly –we’ve had enough!
Instead of resentfully swiping through photos of the Amalfi Coast, pop into this brand new North Perth café for a slice of la dolce vita right here in Perth.
Opening just last week, La Mortazza is slinging a selection of Italian treats that would put any nonna to shame. Fluffy bomba filled with pistachio or Biscoff, decadent tubs of tiramisu and ultra-crisp cannoli filled with creamy ricotta (and make sure to get an espresso on the side).
Also on offer are treats less often seen around these parts, including dainty bocconotti and the larger torta bocconotto. Made in the traditional Abruzzesi fashion, pastries are filled with chocolate, roasted almond and cinnamon – and finished with a light dusting of icing sugar, naturalmente.
If you’re less of a sweet tooth, there’s still plenty to entice – including a few cheeky panini. As well as chicken cotoletta and a pretty tempting salsiccia number, topped with pan-fried friarelli and melty cheese – we’ve got our eye firmly on that mortadella (or mortazza, the Roman term for mortadella and the namesake for the café), pistachio and stracchino.
Also on offer are sumptuous pastas, and a cabinet full of cured meats and cheeses – for here or for home. Shelves are stocked with a selection of Italian pantry staples, and an online deli is in the works.
La Mortazza is located at 500 Fitzgerald Street, North Perth, and is open 6:30AM to 3:00PM weekdays, and 7:00AM to 2:00PM weekends.
