Sure in winter the temptation can be to look outside and see the rain, or feel the cold and think, ‘nah, I’ll stay in tonight’. However, there’s nothing quite like heading out to somewhere warm and cosy, enjoying a few vinos and some live jazz music. Perth has its fair share of just these types of venues, and we’ve dropped a few below to get you out of the house, and into some serious grooves…

Ellington Jazz Club

One of Perth’s most popular and well-established jazz haunts, the Ellington hosts a revolving door of top tier jazz talent from here and abroad. World class music in a warm, intimate environment that has a penchant for getting pretty rowdy (especially at the late shows), there’s a reason it’s Perth’s go-to for live jazz, open just about every night of the week.

The Jazz Cellar

One of Perth’s best (or is it worst?) kept secrets, The Jazz Cellar lies underneath an un-missable red phone box in Mt Hawthorn, and is the home of jazzy good times. Booking ahead is essential, they’ll provide the live jazz entertainment and you just need to bring some booze and food (it’s BYO)!

139 Buxton St, Mt Hawthorn

Pooles Temple

Taking over the old Halfords in the city, Pooles Temple has only just opened but is already proving a hit thanks to the stunning décor, underground speakeasy vibes and of course, live jazz. Every Friday and Saturday the bar hosts a carefully curated selection of live jazz musicians, hand-picked by nationally regarded singer, Bodycoat.

Cnr Hay St & Cathedral Ave, Perth

The Duke Of George

Sitting pretty at the end of East Freo’s beloved George St, The Duke Of George brings a New Orleans-esque mix of blues and jazz. Set within the heritage-listed Brush Factory, their top shelf local jazz musicians are only matched by the locally-sourced produce you’ll find in their Southern Louisana-inspired menu.

135 George St, East Fremantle

Rodney’s Bait & Tackle

Over the past couple of years Rodney’s Bait & Tackle has become a huge hit in the area, and a big part of that is their stacked live music program. And a regular feature of said program is their commitment to live jazz, with usually at least one night a week devoted to masters of the craft.
