Now Open: Masseria brings together pedigreed Chef and Winemaker for Italian farmhouse dining
Many will recognise Masseria’s iconic location on Caves Road as a destination home to notable former identities.
Names like Laurence Wines, Robert Oatley Wines, and most recently, Frui Momento. And now, Larry Cherubino and Ben Jacob collude in what is one of the most talked-about openings of the year, Masseria.
Masseria is all about relaxed but refined Italian plates ideal for long lunches, all-in sharing and for pairing with quality glasses (or bottles) of wine. Leaning into Cherubino’s Italian pedigree, the venue draws its name and its stature from the famed farmhouses popularised in 16th century Puglia.
The venue boasts a grandiose disposition with exposed stone and Iron bark timber beams on full display, with simple and elegant furnishings alongside natural light that keeps the space relaxed and uncomplicated.
That simplicity lets food shine, and from Masseria’s kitchen comes thoughtful plates that span pasta, antipasti, sides and substantial mains.
Chef Jacob flexes his knowledge of Italian cooking with dishes of both familiarity and intrigue, while also leaning into his experiences within the region at former winery fine diners Wise and Aravina. Housemade pastas are simply flavoured but use local ingredients to good effect, a thread throughout the menu – Shark Bay Clams, Augusta pink snapper and heirloom tomatoes to name a few.
Of course, quality Italian ingredients get their moment too – San Daniele prosciutto and good, salty pecorino cheese are just a couple. Still overseeing the kitchen and menu at his seaside diner, Lagoon, Jacob is showing he has broad scope in fine food.

As you may expect, wines are also a highlight, and while Cherubino’s extensive wares are highlighted and celebrated, the lengthy list also includes a stack of imported goodies out of, you guessed it, Italy.
Expect some familiar varietals – Barbera, Nebbiolo and Grenache, say – but also plenty of drops to really test your knowledge on Italy’s many wine regions and varieties. Take a peek at the Museum list for some of Cherubino’s back vintages with bottles celebrating WA regions of note and particularly good years for grape growing. The drinks list is rounded out with local beers and a small ranging of contemporary cocktails.
While retaining touches of its past life, including the famed ‘chick on a stick’ landmark, Masseria is set to comfortably settle into its new identity, offering a point of difference for winery dining in the region. As hype has been building on the refreshed venture for some time, bookings are certain to fill fast.
Messeria is now open at 3478 Caves Road, Wilyabrup, head to masseria.com.au for more info.
