Moon & Mary opens today, from the same crew as Miss Chow’s
Fremantle welcomes a new dining venue today, from restauranteur Jacquie Chan – the brains behind Miss Chow’s, Lucy Luu, Lena’s and Lygon Lane.
Moon & Mary, named for the first documented Chinese settler to Western Australia, Moon Chow and his wife Mary, is located on Henderson Street at the former site of the Old Fremantle Lockup.
Chow arrived to WA in 1829 aboard a spice-trade ship, but would come to call Fremantle home after the ship sank off the coast in the following year – becoming one of the city’s master carpenters, as well as a joiner and boat builder.
Utilising heritage elements of the unique location, Moon & Mary and will bring three venues together to the one site.

The Dining Room will the most formal of the three, with a modern seafood-focused menu (think plenty of freshly-shucked oysters, yuzu kosho-cured kingfish, green curry mussels, whole fried fish with tamarind), and the transformation of two former cells to private dining and “experience” spaces, while in-house distillery and intimate bar Best Behaviour is inspired by a speakeasy – with premium vodka, gin, spiced rum and whiskey all crafted on-site.
At the kitchen’s helm will be Group Executive Chef Aldren Teo, working alongside Head Chef Zane Morrison – previously at South Freo brewery and distillery Running With Thieves.
Outside, The Rec Yard will be Moon & Mary’s relaxed beer garden, where you can soak up the sun ensconced within the historic Freo walls.
Moon & Mary is located at 45 Henderson Street, Fremantle.
