Once you’ve seen Nippon‘s dining room, it’s hard to forget it – or at least that gigantic replica of a flowering cherry blossom spilling over the bar, providing a fluffy, pink canopy as you enjoy your whiskey.
But looks aren’t everything, and Nippon holds its own against some of Perth’s Japanese heavyweights – serving up a selection that pays tribute to prefectures across the country.
Their robatayaki is particularly worthy of note; grilled over charcoal, skewers of tiger prawns, chicken and M9+ wagyu are tender and flavourful, perfect for a quick bite with a drink. That’s the name of the game at Nippon: often izakaya becomes lost in translation, but the concept of grabbing a drink and a few bites to eat after work seems to be flourishing here.
As well as the skewers, you can delve into fresh and delicate sashimi, comforting donburi, or explore some of the larger (yet still-share-able) items – think wagyu steaks, grilled amberjack or tuna collars, or Hokkaido-style lamb cutlets. Produce is sourced locally, with the exception of items that are only available in Japan, or urchin sourced from Tasmania.
As well as dinner, their set lunch specials are sure to become a solid go-to of the business crowd – with an M7 wagyu steak that’ll be the shining light of your next lunch meeting.
Nippon is open Monday to Friday 11:00AM to 9:30PM, Saturdays 4:30PM to 10:00PM , and is located at QV1 Plaza, 250 St Georges Terrace, Perth
