We spend almost every day talking about our favourite places for eating and drinking across Perth – but what about the people who are hard at work behind the scenes, on the bar and in the kitchen?

While it’s rewarding, hospo is also a hard slog for your mental health – with 80% of hospitality workers reporting symptoms including anxiety, depression, stress and addiction.

It’s an issue that Jamie Wolf and CJ Lovell have at the forefront of their operations as owners of Subiaco’s Obi Coffee and West Leederville’s Slow Daze – and why they’ve established a long-term partnership with Healthy Mind Menu, alongside Jamie’s platform Mise en Misplaced.

A not-for-profit organisation, Healthy Mind Menu was founded in 2018 by chefs, leading industry figures and mental health advocates to help combat mental health issues in hospitality, offering support like free online mental health group support sessions and mental health workshops for venues.

Across Mental Health Month this October, Obi and Slow Daze will be fundraising for a healthier hospitality industry – and you can cop a sweet tee in the process!

The month is kicking off with a Healthy Hospo merch release, featuring illustrations from their longtime collaborator Matthew Wong and printed by The Fabric Printer. You’ll be able to pick up a tee in store from October 1, but presales are open now via the Obi website.

As well as the tees, the month of fundraisers will also include a charity soccer game held on October 6, a Blokes and Their Long Macs takeover on October 20 and a wrap up event on October 26 with the folks from Healthy Mind Menu and Kommunity Brew.

Plus, $1 from every coffee sold at Obi and Slow Daze on Friday, October 11, will be donated to the cause!

Over the month, the team are hoping to raise $20,000, with all proceeds going to Healthy Mind Menu – and specifically, towards the launch of the Healthy Mind Menu online Employer Toolkit. The online course is the result of a two year collaborative research project with ECU, and will upskill managers, small business owners, supervisors and HR in the hospitality industry on practical strategies and resources to support employee wellbeing.
