It’s that time of year once again. The ground is damp, the leaves have fallen and the dogs are on the hunt for those elusive black treasures that hide beneath the south-western orchids.

It’s truffle season, and Perth’s bars and restaurants are celebrating in big ways – these are the local eateries leading the charge and taking truffle season to the next level.

La Cholita

Truffles are going south of the border with a visit to Northbridge taqueria La Cholita. They’ve been celebrating the season in style with rotating, truffle-filled specials – with a juicy triple cheese and truffled mushroom quesadilla on offer until August 6, then crispy, fluffy, delicious patatas fritas with parmesan and black truffle aioli from August 7 to 20.

Over in Subi, their sister venue La Condesa will also be serving up the goods – with a truffled mushroom quesadilla on offer all season long as well as a glorious bowl of truffle and parm potato gems!

Santini

This slick CBD Italian eatery is teaming up with top-tier truffle purveyors Truffle Hill for a one-off culinary journey – accompanied by the esteemed drops of Leeuwin Estate. Guided by Santini’s Executive Chef Dario Pompucci and Dan Gedge from Leeuwin Estate, the five courses will immerse you in the earthy flavours of the local delicacy. It’s going down August 3, grab your tickets here.

The Heritage Wine Bar

This luxe CBD wine bar is no stranger to delicious delicacies. For this year’s truffle season, Heritage is pairing some extra special drops of alluringly aromatic Barolo with an irresistible, next-level cheese on toast from Chef Gord Khale – brioche, Halls Suzette, fresh Manjimup truffle and aged truffle honey. Divine!

Bobeche

After your indulgent cheese toastie and Barolo, head downstairs for a nightcap at Heritage’s seductive basement bar Bobeche. This ain’t just any old nightcap though: cold winter nights will be warmed by hot buttered rum, with Manjimup truffle-infused coconut butter.

Testun

These audacious nuovo kids on the block are still bringing big, tongue-in-cheek attitude and even bigger flavours with their anti-purist approach to Italian cuisine.

Last year, Testun blew all of our collective minds with a stracciatella, truffle and Vegemite toastie – this year, they’ve kept the truffle and Vegemite vibes but are whipping up a pasta special instead.

“We use Vegemite, porcini and shiitake to make a broth that we then emulsify with Vegemite, truffle and maple butter, and finish with fresh Splendid Valley truffle.”

“The Vegemite replaces anchovy from the classic Italian combo of butter & anchovy to provide a nice savoury backbone for the dish that actually works super well. It’s just a deeply earthy flavour bomb of a dish!”

Short Order

It’s the simple things that make life worth living, and that certainly includes a burger, fries and refreshing shake. Short Order have been knocking it out of the park at both their Freo and Hay street locations with their authentic take on American burgers and retro burger culture. The firmly enforced K.I.S.S policy applies to all burgs − beef, chicken and vege − with single or double patty options available and usually only a couple of accompaniments to let their simple combo’s sing.

For truffle season this year, Short Order have decide to bring back their mind-blowingly popular creation from the previous season: a southern fried chicken burger topped with shaved Manjimup truffle and finished with whipped Pepe Saya truffle butter.

Levelling things up even more for 2023, Short Order are also serving up a decadent fried truffle mac and cheese croquettes, dipped into an even more decadent bone marrow mayo.

Cosy Del’s

Cosy by name, cosy by reputation. This humble Lathlain wine bar celebrates community with incredible food, chill vibes, and extraordinary vino. The neighbourhood ‘vinerià’ features an ensemble of small and large share plates that champion Italian tradition whilst refusing to be restrained by it.

This truffle season Cosy Del’s is showcasing Coomer Truffles’ finest Southern Forest finds with a mouth-watering one-night-only truffle dinner on Saturday July 29, with five courses and an optional wine pairing.

Betty’s Burgers

As the old saying goes, ‘if you’re gonna do something wrong, do it right,’ and while a trip to Betty’s Burgers in the CBD might be a little bit naughty, their new Truffle Deluxe Burger is a lot of bits nice! Featuring truffle cheese, truffle mayo, beef patty, bacon, lettuce, tomato and pickles, you can level it up with some Truffle Fries AND Truffle Dipping Sauce – a truly decadent dining adventure that runs until July 23.

Truffles Unearthed

The good folks at the WA Good Food Guide are showcasing WA’s stunning truffles with some of the state’s most impressive eateries. Truffles Unearthed will kick off with a luxe dinner at Optus Stadium’s Victory Lounge on June 28, with an immersive truffle-hunting experience followed by lunch at Frui Momento later in July. Indulge in hand-picked truffles and pinot at Bistro Guillaume, or soak up the earthy flavours of lashings of truffles atop Nieuw Ruin’s signature Cauliflower and Pyengana Cheddar Pie at the Fremantle restaurant’s vegetarian feast. Head south for the decadent pairings of Vasse Felix’ Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay with premium Manjimup black truffles.

Events run until the closing dinner on August 13 at Shenton Park’s La Bastide, and more are being added – check out the lineup here.

Zonts Bakehouse

Never ones to do things by halves, Zonts have gone all-out this truffle season! Working in collaboration with Tartes by Amanda, they’ve created a tempting charcoal croissant wheel – filled with macadamia cheese custard, house-made macadamia praline, topped with honey macadamia nuts and the suitably bougie option to add a shaving of fresh Perigord Truffles.

Butter Crumbs

There’s a reason why Butter Crumbs have been a cult hit since their early days at the Mount Claremont Farmers’ Market. Known for their iconic Basque cheesecakes, they’ve been slinging an absolute home run of a truffle cheesecake, topped with Perigord truffle-infused Chantilly cream, caramelised hazelnuts, citrus compote and extra shavings of truffle for good measure. This is a “here for a good time, not a long time” proposition, though – they’re already planning their next decadent truffle special. Not much of a sweet tooth? They’re also serving up a next-level chicken, cheese and truffle sausage roll, as well as a mushroom truffle pie.

Lulu La Delizia

The crew at Lulu La Delizia are masters at keeping things simple – and their truffle special is no different. Bucatini, quattro formaggi, Manjimup black truffle… Perfetto!

Andaluz

Delve into this old-school laneway bar for some decadent truffle treats. Andaluz is celebrating the arrival of truffles with the return of The Bikini: the ultimate toastie. Jamon serrano, manchego, topped with truffle and served with a red pepper relish – uncomplicated and excellent.

Viet Kites

The sight of Viet Kites’ croissant bánh mì is enough to stop us in our tracks. What could be more extravagant than that?

Well, they’ve amped things up for this year’s Truffle Extravaganza with an aburi scallop truffle bánh mì – that’s right, the perfectly-flaky croissant (courtesy of Zonts!) is topped with torched scallops, homemade crab stick salad, fresh truffle mayo and all the classic bánh mì pickles – and a sprinkle of salmon roe and even more fresh sliced truffle.

This sweet French bistro will be turning up the charm with their first ever series of truffle dinners. Head to Madeleine on July 1 and 8 for a sumptuous five course French feast loaded with truffles – from cheese soufflé to a comforting bœuf bourguignon and finishing with a crème caramel with truffle caramel.
