Pasta, panini and pasticceria: Subi’s Piccolo Trattoria opens a new corner deli

Take it from us: it just takes an evening stroll down the southern end of Rokeby Road to be convinced of Piccolo Trattoria’s appeal, the smell of garlic and the sound of chatter wafting over the air.

And the volume of locals clustered around red chequered tablecloths makes it abundantly clear that we’re not alone in our appreciation.

Can’t get one of those charming chequered tables? No dramas – you can now get your hands on their goodies to go, with a brand new Piccolo Deli outpost opening just a few doors down.

Its bay windows glowing with a welcoming warmth on a cold evening, the deli is located in the quaint spot previously home to friendly coffee spot The Corner Store.

Open Monday to Friday from 7AM to 6PM plus 8AM to 3PM on Saturdays, you can get your hands on the same comforting Italian fare they’re serving at the trattoria, but ready to heat ‘n eat at home – think family-sized lasagnes, gnocchi with ragu, Sicilian meatballs, plus jars of sauce and antipasti to stock your pantry with.

But we’ll be heading there at lunchtimes as well, to delve into that cabinet of panini, made with sourdough baguettes from Scarborough bakery Knead.

Sweet treats are sorted with a selection of baked goodies, ranging from New York-style baked cheesecakes to pistachio and white chocolate amaretti, hazelnut-laden baci di dama or canestrelli shortbread. La dolce vita indeed!
