Considering Walyalup’s history of alternative, art-loving counter-culture, it’s pretty shocking that it took until 2022 for the city to gain its first queer bar, The Flaming Galah.

Opening at the tail end of November, the venue is making up for lost time, bringing the welcoming vibes to its charming Essex Street location.

You won’t be able to miss the tie-dye signage or bustling parklet out the front – although inside, you’ll be treated to the fittingly technicolour interior. Retro green and white chequer-boarded tiles are paired with turquoise and pink walls, as well as a spectacularly glittery bar. Here, restrained and minimalist is not an option – this is a space for queer joy and community.

On the drinks-front, expect party-ready cocktails alongside equally festive non-alc options. Drink-friendly bites are both unpretentious and inclusive, with plenty of vegan and vegetarian options on the menu – think jackfruit croquettes, grilled zucchini with chimichurri or the enticingly-named “really good guacamole”.
