Way back in November of 2022 – which somehow feels like a lifetime ago – a pint-sized pop-up named Obi opened their doors.

The itty-bitty takeaway spot, helmed by two former Micrology Coffee guns, Courtis Lovell and Jamie Wolf, almost immediately became a force to reckon with.

Originally scheduled to close on Christmas Eve, they reopened in the new year as a takeaway window before closing for renovations – and now, the pop-up has now officially re-opened as a permanent space.

Visitors to Micrology’s Osborne Park café will certainly see the connection – not just in the shelves stocked with Micrology beans, but the ample use of timber, concrete and pops of colour (this time, a very on-trend cobalt blue).

As well as their signature (great) coffees, they’ve extended their food offerings to suit the larger space. While Obi still doesn’t have a full-blown kitchen, the cabinet selection has grown to include more in the way of sandwiches, sweets and pastries. Some, like tarts from Holly Raye’s, croissants from Zonts, or plant-based cookies from Little Dough Dealer have been bought in from other local businesses, while rolls are assembled in-house.

Bagels are courtesy of the now-ubiquitous The Holy Bagel Company, while Everyday Bread provides sourdough and pumpkin bread ready to be topped with butter or avo and halloumi. Level up your afternoon snack game while you’re there with a tub of cult-fave Perth-made hummus from Yalla Balla, or some of Micrology’s specialty instant coffee – future you will thank you.

Obi Coffee is located at Shop 2, 500 Hay Street, Subiaco.
