We certainly love a hidden basement cocktail bar – and Perth’s chockablock with them. Varnish, Bobèche, Foxtrot Unicorn, Bar Lafayette, Alfred’s… The list goes on. But what if you fancy something a bit more… Green?

Bartender Xander Stucken has had a hand in plenty of these venues over the years, but when a multi-level venue became available in the heart of the city – rooftop terrace included – he couldn’t resist taking it on. Joining forces with his partner and co-owner Verity Coles (previously at the Flour Factory), the pair are showcasing both their green thumbs and their cocktail skills with the aptly-named Terrarium.

Although the venue is tucked away on Howard Street (in a building left unoccupied for a decade), it’s no dark cocktail den. Occupying four levels, the main bar level boasts floor to ceiling windows – framing the leafy street trees outside, the origin of the bar’s name is no mystery.

They’ve also brought the lush leafiness inside, filling not only the bar with their ample collection of plants, but decking out the sizeable roof terrace with greenery.

Inside the lush space, you’ll be able to imbibe a selection of classic cocktails with some unconventional twists – think floral liqueur-infused sours and tropically-tilted martinis – alongside an ample spirits list to play with. Beer and wine drinkers are covered with a tidy selection of both.

In the kitchen, young gun Tyler Sharp is dishing up a fluid menu of classic bar snacks: duck fat potatoes, steak tartare, and plenty of charcuterie are all set to make an appearance.

We got to have a sneak peek inside the new bar last week, check it out below!

Terrarium is located on the corner of Howard Street and Howard Lane, Perth, and will be open for business from July 27th.
