It’s fair to say The Brass Monkey Hotel’s shadow looms large over the Northbridge dining precinct, the spectacular heritage building having stood tall on the corner of James and William Street since way back in 1896, almost 130 years ago.

Over that time it’s gone through a number of different iterations, but in 2022 it’s reinventing itself as a classic corner pub, and moving away from the pseudo-nightclub it had positioned itself as in recent years.

Closing at midnight and serving food til late, it’s aiming to go back to being that honest workers pub, with delicious counter meals, live sport on the big screen and a varied selection of beers on tap (best enjoyed from 5-6pm daily when select pints are $8 each).

They’ve also freshened up their function space, the people watching along their upstairs bar and balcony is still second-to-none, and for the true sports fans out there Patriots Sports Bar is right next door and connected to the venue.

“We’re bringing The Brass back to a classic city corner pub. Right in the buzzing centre of Northbridge we’re slinging cold beer and good food, with friendly staff and the best balcony in Northbridge,” says Brass Monkey Venue Manager, Bianca.

“We have something for everyone. Whether it’s sports, live music, rooftop views, casual and corporate functions, or a pub grub lunch. Bring your lover, gal pals, mother or your old man. See you at the pub.”

Food-wise we’re talking classics like chicken parmis, pizzas and porterhouse steaks, along with a few fun sharers like cheeseburger spring rolls, mac n cheese croquettes and sweet potato fries, while Patriots has its own, American-diner themed menu.

Any corner pub worth its malt has a decent tap beer selection, and the Brass keeps it simple with over 15 options including “Crowd Pleasers” like Swan Draught; “Home” beers like Single Fin, Biggie Juice and Balter; and “Away” standards like Stella and Guinness.

When it comes to running a proper pub that can be relied upon, sometimes it’s better to keep it simple and do the right things well, and if this is the Brass Monkey’s ethos for 2022 and beyond then we say bring it on.
