We’re hopelessly devoted to the Americana charm of Grease the Musical, so ahead of its opening at Crown Theatre this winter (have you got your tickets yet?), we’re searching out Perth’s most electrifying, retro-inspired venues!
Galaxy Drive-In
With the drive-in one of the most iconic locations in Grease, where else could we start but at Perth’s last remaining drive-in movie theatre (and one of the last in Australia)? Screening new release movies, Galaxy Drive-In is a must for anyone trying to channel the retro romance for your next date night – but let’s just hope you don’t get too fresh and end up stranded at the drive-in, branded a fool…
Mama Mahoney’s
Ask anyone about classic American-style diners in Perth, and chances are high that Mama Mahoney’s will crack a mention early on. This Malaga Markets stalwart may be a bit of a hole-in-the-wall, but in terms of Americana classics? It really can’t be beat. Pining for diner breakfast? Get there early in the day for pancakes, waffles and stuffed French toast, biscuits and gravy, homefried potato hash or stuffed omelettes. Later in the day, dig into a feast of smash burgers with waffle fries, grilled hot dogs, or heart-stopping sandwiches (think Reubens, Philly cheesesteaks, monster BLTs and more). Just make sure to leave room for dessert!
Satchmo
While Satchmo might not give such classic Californian Americana vibes, the retro diner is nevertheless one of our favourites when we’re craving a feast from the 50 states. As they say, “food and coffee, both good” is their remit, combining Jewish diner classics with New Orleans soul – and when we see their rooster roll or a Philly cheesesteak, we do feel compelled to sing “you’re the one that I want!”.
Joey’s Swan Valley Diner
Joey’s bubblegum-pink, Frenchy’s hair-hued exterior is already a favourite for retro enthusiasts around Perth – and the old-school vibes extend to the menu! This alfresco diner manages to bring the vintage Americana aesthetic outside, where you can dine on hot dogs, burgers, waffle fries, sundaes and milkshakes to your heart’s content.
Classic Cars and Coffee
This car is automatic… Systematic… Hydromatic… Why it’s greased lightning!
The first Sunday of every month sees Perth’s own greased lightnings, the hottest hot rods, classic collectibles, supercars and bikes of every era descend on UWA for the Classic Cars and Coffee meetup, with part of their proceeds supporting the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. Of course the cars are just one part of the event, with a huge selection of food trucks and coffee vans to keep you nourished while you’re there!
Kustom Klaws
When it comes to a retro aesthetic, nobody can do it like the team at Kustom Klaws. Owner Kenjai is not just a world champ nail artist but an award-winning burlesque and cabaret performer – retro is practically her middle name! From extravagant, blingy talons to a simple gel mani, you’re sure to go home with some electrifying nails.
GREASE will be coming to Perth’s Crown Theatre from June 30, with an all-new production that’s more electrifying than ever before! Take a trip to Rydell High this winter, with a cast of rising stars taking on the iconic roles of Danny (Joseph Spanti), Sandy (Annelise Hall), Kenickie (Keanu Gonzalez) and the whole gang – including Perth’s own Mackenzie Dunn as Rizzo!
The production will also feature legendary performers like Patti Newton as the much-loved Miss Lynch, Jay Laga’aia as the smooth-talking Vince Fontaine, and the unparalleled Marcia Hines bringing Teen Angel to shimmering, sparkling life.
