On the hunt for a good cup of the green stuff? We’ve got you covered.

While matcha has been around for nearly a thousand years, the antioxidant-rich, green tea-based drink has only relatively recently entered the mainstream here in Australia. But, hey, better late than never! Loved for its earthy flavour profile and range of health benefits, matcha has fast become a popular alternative to coffee, even here in caffeine-addicted Perth.

Fortunately for matcha lovers, there are plenty of cafes that serve tasty iced or hot matcha to sip on across Perth. Not to mention, matcha-infused pastries and cakes too – a matcha made in heaven (too much?).

Whether you’re a matcha connoisseur or yet to try, here’s where you can find the best matcha in Perth.

Micrology

We all know that Micrology are guns at roasting and brewing coffee, but did you know they also make a mean matcha? Located in Osborne Park, the beloved roastery and café is the perfect place to get your green fix, whether that’s a matcha latte or a refreshing iced matcha. As for the nibbles, you can expect some tasty toasties, tarts and cinny scrolls provided by none other than North Street Store.

Chu Bakery

The queue to Chu Bakery may be long, but we say it’s more than worth it if you’re a fan of perfectly flaky croissants, picture-perfect sweet treats and 10 out of 10 matcha. In addition to your usual matcha latte, Chu also offers an iced strawberry matcha latte that’s so tasty you likely won’t have any left by the time you claim your Hyde Park picnic spot. Matcha lovers should also keep their eyes peeled for Chu’s sweet specials which have included a heavenly matcha strawberry cream bun.

Arrival Hall

Designer furniture store and café Arrival Hall ticks all the boxes, and by that, we mean just the two: drool-worthy interiors and a drool-worthy menu. After perusing the store, be sure to stop in for brunch at Arrival Hall’s café where you can expect dishes like pandan crumpets, kimchi and miso pork belly scrambled eggs and, of course, some delicious matcha tea. Using Kintea matcha and a house-made blueberry compote, matcha enthusiasts swear by Arrival Hall’s iced blueberry iteration.

Lulu LaLa Coffee & Food

If Instagrammable lattes and baked goods are what you’re after, do yourself a favour and stop by Lulu LaLa. Located by the Centre for Stories in Northbridge, Lulu Lala is the perfect morning pitstop if you’re hopping around the city. In addition to yummy matcha lattes (which you can get hot, cold and with cream should you need a hit of sugar), Lulu Lala also whips up other sugary variations including butterscotch cream lattes and deep chocolate lattes.

Teassential

It comes as little surprise that tea shop and brew bar Teassential knows its way around a good matcha. Situated in the city’s gorgeous State Buildings, Teassential is a haven for tea lovers, offering a range of high-quality teas to take home as well as knock-your-socks-off matcha lattes made using authentic Japanese matcha powder. And if you’re a fan of hojicha lattes (roasted green tea and milk), Teassential is the best, and perhaps even only, place to go in Perth.

Café Guilty Pleasure

From rich gateaus to citrus tarts and crepe cakes, Café Guilty Pleasure is heaven on earth for those with a deep, unwavering love for sweet treats, namely me. With two locations in Perth, one in Northbridge and another in Mount Lawley, this decadent dessert café has continued to earn rave reviews for its ultra-fluffy cakes and matcha-infused creations, which have included matcha fresh cream cake and matcha Basque cheesecake. You’ll also find matcha in classic liquid form too, of course.

Giant Coffee

Despite the name, Giant Coffee is a tiny Northbridge café that has quickly become a favourite for coffee and pastries. Along with tasty single-origin coffee, you can also enjoy an einspanner (a Viennese hot or cold espresso topped off with whipped cream) which Giant offers in the classic style as well as with matcha instead of coffee.

The Little Concept

Wray Ave staple The Little Concept do a lot of things right (the coffee, the healthy takeaway snacks, the beautiful dine-in breaky), and for a part of Perth not short on alternative coffee options, their matcha may just be the best of the south. A cosy little spot to enjoy it in winter, a light and fresh space during the warmer months, no trip to Wray Ave is complete without a little TLC while you’re there.
