The sweet tooths are obviously in charge of things around here, what with our current pastry obsession – and with the addition of Whisked The Right Wei, it’s got no sign of slowing down!

Opening last week in Lathlain, the café and patisserie is bringing some picture-perfect pastries to the ‘burbs.

The patisserie is helmed by pastry chef Deric Fong, AKA Wei, who made his start at Swanbourne’s Choux Café, working under the venerable late Emmanuel Mollois.

Choux was Perth’s foremost destination for delicate, technicolour macarons and meticulously crafted pastries and gateaux – and when Mollois opened Bistro Des Artistes in 2013, Fong became the head pastry chef.

After spending almost a year baking his signature treats from home, Fong has settled in at the former Commonplace Bakery site. You can expect to find classic Parisian treats – think flakey, buttery croissants, dainty cakes and some pretty hard to resist palmiers – many of which utilise Mollois’ recipes with Fong’s own twist.

We’re particularly besotted by the amazingly flakey mille feuille, burnt Basque cheesecake topped with Chantilly cream and the intensely chocolatey, hazelnutty gianduja.

While we’re firmly focused on the sweets, you can also pop in for a slightly more savoury brunch. As well as reliable classics like eggs benny and smashed avo, you can delve into Asian-influenced plates like chilli-scramble eggs (arguably a new classic) and kimchi fried rice, or more French flavours with a selection that includes galettes and smoked salmon croquettes.

Whisked The Right Wei is located at 25B Gallipoli Street, Lathlain.
