25th Anniversairy of Australian Service in Timor-Leste
Join us at the State War Memorial (Kings Park) to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Australian service in Timor-Leste.
After East Timor voted for independence from Indonesia in August 1999, pro-Indonesian militia responded with violence against civilians and personnel of the United Nations mission to oversee the ballot (UNAMET). In September, Australia led n international peacekeeping force (INTERFET) to stop the bloodshed and oversee the transition to self-rule. In 2000, a United Nations transitional administration took over (UNTAET) the first of five further missions of support in which Australian participated. The last Australian peacekeepers left East Timor in 2013.
