Community ensemble, South Side Symphony Orchestra will be performing a children’s concert on Saturday 25 March and will be donating all proceeds to the Youth Focus charity which supports frontline mental health services and education programs.  The performance will take place at Mount Pleasant Bowling Club and will feature the famous music from Pirates of the Caribbean as well as Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, Brahms’ Symphony No 1 and Rieu’s Radetzky March.  In addition to giving back to the community, the performance is an opportunity for little people and grownups to get up close to a variety of instruments including bold brass, sweeping strings, whimsical woodwinds and powerful percussion.

Established in February 2011, the South Side Symphony Orchestra, is a not for profit, community ensemble based in Melville with over 50 enthusiastic, vibrant musicians from diverse backgrounds. SSSO’s classical kid’s concerts are designed to take children on a musical journey of discovery and learning with the idea of sparking a love of music.  The experience also provides parents and carers with an opportunity to gauge their child’s interest in pursuing future music education.

Orchestra founder Irene Wright says “Our children’s concerts are a fun and friendly way of introducing young people to the genre of classical music.  Watching little ones see and hear an orchestra for the first time is a real thrill and it’s so special to play a part in it (no pun intended).  Always popular with children has been the chance to step onto the conductor’s podium, baton in hand and have a turn at conducting the orchestra.  This will once again feature on this year’s program and without a doubt, both children and musicians alike will relish the experience.”
