If the start of 2020 has shown us anything, it’s that Australians know how to unite in the face of a crisis, and the City of Perth is encouraging Western Australians to come together once again for the Australia Day Skyworks.

The largest event of its kind in the country, the 2020 event will see another huge line up of free entertainment, food markets and giveaways, with a strong focus on helping out those affected by the devastating bushfires around the country.

And while you can check the bottom of this article for City of Perth’s official statement regarding how the Skyworks event will be helping raise money to bushfire appeals, let’s tuck into what exactly is going on this coming Sunday 26 January.

First up, where to watch: There’ll be three main zones to catch the Skyworks over the Swan River – the Perth Foreshore (Supreme Court Gardens and Langley Park), Kings Park and the South Perth Foreshore.

Stretching for 1.5km from east Langley Park down to the Bell Tower, the Perth Foreshore will host a full day of fun and activities with the free Lotterywest Entertainment Zone. There’ll be free carnival rides, obstacle courses and skill games (including a High Ropes course and the Wipeout Challenge), a massive Aussie-themed maze, freestyle Motocross and BMX, food market and more.

Meanwhile the Supreme Court Gardens will be celebrating Aboriginal and Torrest Strait Island cultures with the annual Birak Concert, and performances from Lilly Gogos, Taaliny, Indigo Ellis and more.

Up at Kings Park it’s all about prime viewing and a more relaxed vibe, with people encouraged to arrive before 2pm to setup your picnic for the arvo. From there the Air Show starts at 3pm leading up to the 8pm Skyworks.

And the third major viewing area, Sir James Mitchell Park, will see City Of South Perth hosting another family friendly day from 2pm. There’ll be an Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony, Great Aussie BBQ Breakfast and plenty of free activities, rides and entertainment for all ages in the Celebration Zone from 3pm.

Importantly, Skyworks is an incredibly accessible event, with temporary ACROD parking, accessible toilets, quiet zones and dedicated viewing areas, With entertainment kicking off at 3pm (including the chance win $1000 every 30 minutes courtesy of The mix94.5 and Channel 9 Skyworks Village), people are encouraged to get down early.

City of Perth Statement:

The City of Perth is encouraging Western Australians to come together this Australia Day to build community spirit, show support and raise money for fellow Australians in bushfire affected areas.

Our deepest sympathies are with those Australians and their families who continue to be affected by the bushfires in many parts of Australia. We understand the emotional turmoil these fires have caused for the community.

As part of the City of Perth Australia Day Skyworks, the City is working with event partners to raise awareness and coordinate fundraising for Australian bushfires in the lead up to and on the day.

The City will also work with Skyworks partners to recognise the victims of the fires at the event.

While we have heard community feedback, Skyworks is planned 10 months in advance to ensure the event is safe, accessible and enjoyable for the whole community. Therefore, no significant savings would be achieved if Skyworks was to be cancelled.

Instead, as Skyworks is the biggest Australia Day event in the country, let us use this event to build community spirit by uniting in solidarity with our mates in fire ravaged areas and fundraising as much as possible.

Fundraising volunteers will be encouraging Skyworks attendees to donate as much as they can on the day via cash or EFTPOS methods to help those in need.

All Western Australians are encouraged to donate to existing authorised state and national appeals that support the national bushfire disaster.

You can donate to the City of Perth bushfire fundraiser HERE, with all proceeds going to the Australian Red Cross.
