Ralph Rackstraw, a charming but lowly sailor loves Captain Corcoran’s daughter, Josephine. She feels the same way but is conflicted between romance and reason as her patrician father intends her to marry the well-connected and snobbish Sir Joseph Porter, the First Lord of the Admiralty. However, when Sir Joseph blithely espouses egalitarianism for all classes, he inadvertently encourages Ralph and Josephine to overturn social convention and they make plans to elope. Meanwhile, Captain Corcoran finds himself surprisingly attracted to the earthy Mrs Cripps (Little Buttercup) a contraband vendor, but hesitates due to his social rank and standing. Will a decades-old secret be the topsy-turvy twist that heralds a happy ending?
