Furthering its commitment to a CBD hub that is both a catalyst for, and a synthesis of the arts, culture, food and wine, State Buildings has just announced the program for the much-anticipated State Makers 2023 when it returns this May! State Makers, now in its eighth year, brings together a series of events that deliciously blur the lines between music, art, food and wine in an iconic, historic setting.

Events are as varied as a charcoal drawing class with renowned illustrator Pippa McManus, to a Simply Red-themed wine tasting with award winning sommelier and Director of Wine Emma Farrelly (pictured below) and State Buildings Director of Arts and Culture - and noted chanteuse - Ali Bodycoat on the microphone: “We are the city’s beating heart and urban playground,” says State Buildings Executive General Manager, Byron Wright. “We are here to provide you with world-class experiences, featuring talent right here in the building and those around WA.”

State Makers highlights include;

• COAST - From Albany to Broome, with over 10,000 kilometres of coast, WA boasts the lion’s share of Australia’s best seafood. Let the Wildflower team guide you through an indulgent five-course seafood menu carefully matched to a selection of the state’s best and most interesting white wines, chosen by Director of Wine and renowned sommelier Emma Farrelly.

• Simply Reds - If you don’t know the State Buildings by now... Part Simply Red tribute, part unique wine tasting, two of our stars – Director of Wine, Emma Farrelly and Director of Arts and Culture Ali Bodycoat come together on the one night to have some fun, and sing some timeless songs, over six different reds chosen specifically for the event.

• Chows Table Co-Lab - Turns out you can take the boy out of the country... And thank goodness for that. Join Wilyabrup chef Mal Chow, proprietor at South West favourite

Chow’s Table, for two special events - lunch and dinner - at Long Chim. Mal’s Perth takeover will be a rare opportunity to sample the wonderful modern Asian food of his restaurant... in the City. We predict enormous fun.

• The Daily Grand - What better venue for live piano interludes than the State Buildings’ own magnificent, historic Postal Hall? Grab a coffee and listen to our very best and brightest players at the grand piano, just for you.

• Phil Walley-Stack - Much loved singer-songwriter Phil Walley-Stack is a proud Noongar man raised in Country Western Australia. Phil has been performing since he was a child, and is an accomplished performing artist, musician, dancer and author. Phil’s beautiful vocals soar to the lofty heights of the Postal Hall as he shares his heartfelt storytelling, didge and guitar playing, with special guests and friends.

• Ampersand Estates + Rainfall Distillery Dinner - With an intriguing backstory to their Pemberton estate Ampersand, entrepreneurs Corrie Scheepers and Melissa Bell will host a special dinner in COMO The Treasury’s beautiful Cape Arid Rooms with wines from Ampersand, gins and vodkas from their Rainfall distillery.

“We started State Makers with the vision of bringing together the very best of WA under the one roof,” says Wright “to create extraordinary culinary and cultural experiences to the heart of Perth. Each year we’ve been able to showcase various chefs, winemakers and artists who are up and coming; they are dreamers, doers, hedonists, extroverts and newcomers.”

The State Buildings represents over 140-years of Perth history and State Makers was created to be, and always will be, a celebration of Western Australia. “The State Buildings believes that this is a place for the people, of the people. Beneath the essence of our hospitality, it is our greatest obligation to support and nurture the arts within the cultural heart of our city, by providing access to the very best and brightest that this State has to offer,” added Director of Arts and Culture, Ali Bodycoat.

“No cosmopolitan centre can thrive without its arts and culture – whether that be through live performance, visual arts, conversation or connection. State Makers 2023 invites the people of Perth to experience a stunning array of shared moments, curated to elevate and densify this brilliant city scape. It is our promise to foster cultural excellence right here at home,” added Bodycoat.
