Expanding on his 2019 exhibition with Duncan Wright, ‘New and Used Australian Object,’ this exhibition will be fittingly presented at Cheap Tongue Gallery, an old lanolin station in the heart of Fremantle, located behind Shacks Holden, home of new and used cars.
‘Time in Lieu’ showcases traditional paintings of Fremantle iconography, mural work, wall-based sculpture, and some quirky collected items found along the way. This new collection celebrates reclaimed materials, taking the familiar and re-framing it.
In this exhibition, Blake favours bold ultramarine blues, recycled soft metals treated with patina, old brass nails sourced from a deceased estate in Geraldton’s west end, and handmade paints using ochre and pigments from the Murray River and the Pilbara. Exploring the transformative nature of art through gathered items, handmade paints, recycled timbers, and soft metals, these sculptural works aim to promote conversation around consumerism within the creative industry, sustainability, and responsible art-making practices. Each object holds a story, and by juxtaposing different materials, the works aim to create tension between them, like ‘sitting two strangers together at a dinner party.’
