West Australian Opera is hosting a jam-packed season of theatre shows, school workshops, outdoor performance and community singing classes. Whether you’d like to sit back and enjoy a show or learn to get in on the action, this program is bringing it all to you.

MAINSTAGE: His Majesty’s Theatre

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
13, 16, 18, 20 July 2019

A story told since the mid-19th century, Sweeney Todd is a grim tale of loss, revenge, and… pies!  The unholy team of vengeful Benjamin Barker and twisted pie-maker, Mrs. Lovett will take you on a chilling melodrama sure to leave you perched at the edge of your seat.

Macbeth
19, 22, 24, 26 October

The Shakespearian classic re-told like never before in this new co-production with the West Australian Opera and the State Opera of South Australia. Lord and Lady MacBeth find themselves in a mess of lies, deceit and murder after a dark and greedy fight for the crown. Be careful what you wish for, the past will always come back to haunt you.

City of Perth Opera in the Park: La Traviata
2 February, Supreme Court Gardens Perth

When it comes to all great love stories, it usually involves a prostitute and a disapproving family, right? Look at Pretty Woman and Moulin Rouge and tell me I’m wrong. La Traviata is a love story between a man, a courtesan and family reputation. Does love always conquer all? Find out at this free outdoor event.

Opera in the Quarry
27, 28, 29, 30 March, Quarry Amphitheatre

Back by popular demand, Opera in the Quarry brings you four concert performances this season. Make the most of the beautiful weather with a picnic under the stars as you enjoy the show.

Opera in the Pinnacles

Saturday 27 April, The Pinnacles, Cervantes

What better setting for a show than the regional beauty, Cervantes pinnacles. This unique show is a collaboration of song and dance featuring; STRUT dance, West Australian Opera and choreographer Stephanie Lake.

Act-Belong-Commit Sing Out Loud!

Monday 18 March to Friday 22 March (Harmony Week)
Monday 2 September to Friday 6 September

If you’ve been in your choir for years or if you only sound good singing in the shower, this class is open for everyone. Following the West Australian Music Curriculum, explore dynamics, form, pitch and tempo. After a full class of learning new techniques, settle in and join the artists in a final aria. Fully booked out last season so get in quick. 

Act-Belong-Commit Our Opera Our WA

Monday 20 May to Friday 24 May

Two singers and a pianist walk into a bar, uh I mean classroom. This is no joke, learn about the journey of these three musicians as they give detailed accounts of their career path. Through learning about the stories of professional musicians, it will encourage you to consider your possibilities.

Act-Belong-Commit Turning Fork

Available on request throughout the year, this new initiative looks to support teachers and community directors in advocating and supporting both choral singing and performance. This class came as a direct demand from schools to support students during their performances and school based musical productions.

 Act-Belong-Commit Wace Workshop Supported by UWA Conservatorium of Music

Date – Saturday, March 9
Duration – 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Venue – Callaway Auditorium, University of Western Australia

This class is for students focusing on their year 11 and 12 ATAR performance exams. Technical aspects such as performance psychology, improvisation and performance technique are all part of this immersive session.

West Australian Opera is opening its doors early to teachers and secondary students to have an introduction to the opera. Come down before the show to learn and understand this classic art form.

Cost – $15 per student or only $5 per student if booked with a main house performance. Minimum fee of $300

This incredibly popular workshop teaches you all there is to know about industry-level performance make-up.  Learn from the best as they walk you through face art such as; ageing, bruising and blood!
