But if you’re on the hunt for a spot where you can catch a cruisy sunset, venture along a lesser-known path, and get your heart pumping – all within a single afternoon – then Baldwin’s Bluff is the place to be.
Just an hour from the city, this hidden gem seamlessly blends stunning views with a satisfying hike, all while keeping a few surprises up its sleeve. If you’re craving a natural adventure that goes beyond the ordinary, Baldwin’s Bluff is ready to deliver.
Need to know
Located in the Serpentine National Park, the trail itself is a fraction under 6km and gains a challenging 200m elevation over the course of 3km. It is graded as a class 4 trail and requires a moderate level of fitness. Keep in mind it can be even more challenging on a hot day or in wet weather. The full trail should take you between 1 and 3 hours to complete based on fitness and pace.
A whisper of history
Baldwin’s Bluff is named after the Baldwin family, early settlers in the region who were known for their pioneering spirit. Legend has it that the bluff was a favourite lookout point for spotting incoming storms—nature’s very own weather app. Channel your inner pioneer as you stand atop the bluff.
Photographer’s paradise
Beyond the panoramic views, Baldwin’s Bluff offers unexpected photo ops. The trail is dotted with boulders, twisted trees, and unique rock formations that create dramatic backdrops. Whether you’re an amateur or a seasoned pro, the rugged beauty of this trail provides endless opportunities for that perfect shot.

A sunset worth settling in for
Time your hike right, and you’ll catch one of the most underrated sunsets in the region. The bluff’s western-facing viewpoint turns into a natural amphitheater as the sun dips below the horizon. It’s the perfect spot for a cheeky sundowner—just don’t forget your head torch for the journey back down.
Less is more
One of the true joys of Baldwin’s Bluff is its understated charm. Unlike more commercialised trails, this bluff offers a simple, unpretentious experience. There are no fancy signs or crowded lookouts – just you and the trail. While at the top, you might be tempted to add to the Bluff Rock Cairn, but we recommend leaving it as is, preserving the natural beauty and history of the spot.
Two for one
The adventure doesn’t end when you descend from the bluff. The trail starts and finishes at the Serpentine National Park picnic area, just a short stroll from the Serpentine Falls platform. After your hike, you can unwind by the falls, soaking in the beauty of one of Perth’s most iconic natural attractions. It’s the perfect way to cap off your Baldwin’s Bluff adventure.
An underrated adventure, we think this is the escape you didn’t know you needed, and in just half a day, you can have an adventure worth writing home about. Sure, the views are spectacular, but it’s the unexpected quirks and quiet moments that make Baldwin’s Bluff truly worthy of a day out.
