The name and opening date for the new linked Causeway pedestrian and cyclist bridges has been officially announced, with Boorloo Bridge set to welcome visitors from December 22.

Major components of the one-kilometre long, cable-stayed river crossing were completed in August, including 16 bridge modules and all bridge pylons.

Connecting the Victoria Park foreshore to Perth through Heirisson Island, the opening of Boorloo Bridge will be celebrated with a family-free community event, with the bridge’s inaugural light show on display once the sun sets.

Reaching 52 metres at the highest point of the boomerang pylon, and 46 metres high at each of the two digging stick pylons, the six metre wide bridge is also wrapped in a whopping 17,000 LED lights that will illuminate the city skyline.

Additionally, four Noongar artists have been commissioned to create public works in the surrounding parks, with sculptures to be created at Point Fraser, McCallum Park and Matagarup (Heirisson Island) by Justin Martin and Lea Taylor, as well as murals by Jodie Riley and Rubeun Yorkshire.

Landscaping around the bridge included the planting of 90,000 shrubs, 200 new trees on McCallum Park, 350 new trees on Heirisson Island and 140 new trees on Point Fraser.

“This is an incredible structure that will become an iconic part of our city skyline for decades to come,” said Transport Minister Rita Saffioti.

“The current walking and cycling paths on the Causeway are significantly constrained, no longer fit for purpose or safe for people that use them.”

“These bridges will not only provide a safer way to cross the river, they’ll also be the first in Western Australia to include state-of-the-art lighting that will be capable of showing moving images.”

“The Causeway Bridge is an important transformational project for Perth and will provide a gateway entrance to East Perth that will ultimately bring more people to the Perth CBD,” added Western Australian Lands Minister and Perth MLA John Carey.

“The name – Boorloo Bridge – highlights the importance of Aboriginal place naming in Western Australia.”
