The major components of the new Causeway Pedestrian and Cyclist Bridges project are complete, the WA Government announced over the weekend.

It’s another significant milestone for the one-kilometre-long river crossing that will connect McCallum Park, Heirisson Island and Point Fraser, east of Perth.

16 bridge modules, along with all bridge pylons are now in place, with works expected to be completed by the end of this year.

“Commuters across Perth have watched this project come to life day to day, and with major structures in place, we’re one step closer to delivering this iconic new infrastructure for the city,” said Premier Roger Cook.

“Our new Causeway bridges will deliver a faster, safer trip to the city for pedestrians and cyclists, and will become a new landmark on the city skyline.”

Upcoming works include state-of-the-art functional and feature lighting, along with a “significant landscaping program” which will include 90,000 shrubs, 200 new trees on McCallum Park, 350 new trees on Heirisson Island and 140 new trees on Point Fraser.

There will also be new design installations along the route creating new public spaces, sculptures, murals, way-finding and seating.

“This is going to be Western Australia’s most iconic bridge – a stunning new river crossing with state-of-the-art lighting, and incredible structures like the 50-metre-tall cable-stayed boomerang pier,” said WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti.

“More importantly, it will provide some 3,000 pedestrians with safer access across the river, with the existing path on the Causeway Bridge well beyond its capacity.”
