First rocks arrive to begin construction on Albany’s artificial ‘Southern Ocean Surf Reef’
It was just under a year ago we reported that Albany’s Middleton Beach was going to score its own artificial reef, and this week the first rocks to commence its installation have arrived.
The ‘Southern Ocean Surf Reef’ development has begun, with construction underway on what’s set to be another unique tourism drawcard for Albany.
Regional Development Minister Don Punch visited the port city this week as local quarried rock and specialist marine equipment also arrived for construction, to be undertaken from now until March.
“The project will add yet another drawcard to the spectacular Great Southern region, attracting keen surfers and tourists,” said Mr Punch. “The artificial surf reef will create a more consistent quality, surfable wave for a range of target surfer groups from beginner to intermediate abilities.”
The rocks will be placed on the seabed floor, around 140 metres offshore, which will eventually provide rides up to 100 metres.
It’s expected the reef will provide surfable waves for just over 40% of the year.

“I have been working closely with the City of Albany, along with the Albany Boardriders club and Surfing WA to make this project a reality,” said Albany MLA Rebecca Stephens. “I thank the local surfing community for their dedication to bringing an accessible surfing site close to town.”
Part of the redevelopment also includes improved amenities at the Albany Surf Life Saving Club.
“The Albany Boardriders and Surfing WA have already committed to holding surf competitions at the site, which is set to become a unique and accessible tourism drawcard for the Great Southern region,” added Ms Stephens.
With the closest surfing locations to Albany around 40 minutes away, the mid-2025 completion date can’t come soon enough!
