Nature play and seaside staycays: How to have fun around City of Stirling this school holidays
The end of school term is rapidly approaching! And while our heads are spinning with just how quickly the time seems to whizz past us, parents across Perth are once again scrambling for activities to keep the kids entertained for another fortnight.
Stretching from Herdsman Lake up to Watermans Bay, the City of Stirling has swathes of suburbs chock-a-block with activities for all ages – including plenty that won’t cost you a cent.
Get amongst nature with City of Stirling’s Play Trails
Get the whole family adventuring with one of four Play Trails! The free app will unlock challenges, quizzes and games for you to complete as you venture through the parks.
Explore a corner of Star Swamp – with over 96 hectares of Class-A reserve including a semi-permanent freshwater lake, it’s home to over 80 bird species, paperbark trees, native orchids and you may even spot a quenda! Take in the salty ocean air at Trigg Bushland, the serene surrounds of Lake Gwelup, or learn all about native wildlife at Herdsman Lake.

Spend a rainy day at Karrinyup
If the skies have opened, perhaps adventuring through the great outdoors becomes a bit too much to handle! As well as Karrinyup Centre’s world-class shopping (including WA’s first LEGO store), catch the latest blockbuster at HOYTS, hit up the retro arcade games at Archie Brothers Cirque Electriq, or get some healthy competition going with a round of mini golf at Holey Moley – followed by some delish eats for the whole family on the West Deck, of course.
Feed the fam
Speaking of delish eats, there’s plenty on offer – whether you’ve got some picky-eaters or budding gourmands on your hands. Hit up Wembley Golf Course for another round of mini golf, then follow it up with snacks morning, noon and night at 300 Acres.
Bring the whole fam (fur babies included!) to Little T’s, and the kids can scramble over the playground to their heart’s content while you indulge in a slice of their homemade carrot cake or an absolutely decadent waffle burger.
Plus, foodies of all ages can’t go past the goods at Monsterella – from their 48-hour, naturally risen pizza bases to that iconic truffle carbonara, who could resist? (They’ve also got a “bambini” menu for kids with a taste for the simple pleasures in life.)
While Blue Lotus at first appear to be just a lovely garden centre café, there’s more than meets the eye. An enclosed play area means little ones have plenty of entertainment, while the Waldecks’ tranquil water features and lush plants make it a delightful place to while away an afternoon.

Scarborough is OK!
From sunrise to beyond sunset, Scarbs has something going on. When the weather drops and going for a dip just isn’t on the cards, kids can burn off some energy at the Whale Playground, or strap on the skates and bust out some moves at the Snake Pit: Scarbs’ skate and BMX park.
Every Saturday arvo from May ‘til October, the foreshore ignites for the winter iteration of the Scarborough Sunset Markets. Warm your soul and fill hungry tummies with some of Perth’s most delicious food trucks and dessert vendors, freshly roasted marshmallows and plenty of good vibes from the resident DJs.
Make it a staycay
Why spend hours in the car when you can have an epic winter staycay practically on your doorstep? Whether you’re soaking up the winter sun at Karrinyup Waters Resort or stay so close to the beach at the Rendezvous Hotel or Seashells Scarborough you can practically feel the sand between your toes, there’s a whole heap of accommodation options – you can even grab a nifty discount code or two from the City of Stirling website.
