Perth Zoo building new “Primate Crossing” that lets gibbons swing directly over your head!
Works have begun on a new gibbon habitat at Perth Zoo – including a “Primate Crossing” that will have gibbons swinging directly above your head!
The new gibbon habitat is part of the Zoo’s new $11.7 million Parkland Heart Precinct, which is the next phase in the $51 million Perth Zoo Master Plan.
The state of the art redevelopment will triple the gibbons’ habitat area, and give visitors a chance to see them in action as they swing on the rope pathways overhead.

The Parkland Heart Precinct will also feature a free BBQ area, new event areas, ablution block, additional seating, and a new arbour “which will display the six Noongar seasons, with seating designed to pay homage to WA’s wildlife.”
As part of the first stage of the Master Plan, the all-ages, all-access, nature-based playground, new café precinct and function centre officially opened in October 2023.
The Perth Zoo Master Plan hopes to create opportunities for visitors to “delve further into our world than ever before” – with future stages including a new Conservation Science Precinct, Orangutan Rainforest Precinct, expansion of the African Savannah exhibit and a new “Entry Village” that reorients the Zoo towards Windsor Park and the South Perth ferry terminal.
“Western Australians love a day at the Zoo, and we want to make sure the Perth Zoo experience is world-class for years to come,” said Premier Roger Cook.
“Last year’s launch of the new café precinct, function centre and playground resulted in the Zoo reaching record visitation that month, and we want to keep that success going.”
