Nestled between the ocean and the river, it’s easy to overlook North Freo… But you’d be missing out!

The charming suburb punches well above its weight when it comes to eating, drinking, and all-round good times – here are just a few of our favourite places to visit in North Freo:

Old Bridge Cellars

“So, what are we drinking?” asks Old Bridge Cellars’ awning. “One of everything”, you will reply on the way out. This North Freo spot has been around for yonks, and you’re sure to leave with something you never expected – it might even be a flakey souffra, an artisanal hot sauce, or a La Paleta icecream. The drinks pairing you never knew you needed. And as if we couldn’t love them any more, these legends expanded in 2021 to another store in Como – so it’s even easier to get your hands on a good drop – as well as a new space next door in 2023 where they host events, tastings and workshops.

Pour People

Opening at the tail end of 2023, Pour People have taken over the Thompson Road spot once home to Wise Child Wine Store (now on Market Street) – officially taking the helm of Perth’s oldest bottle shop! Bringing more of a technicolour, maximalist flair to the space (and a hefty dose of fun), the location remains a top-tier spot to pick up a bottle of local and international wine, craft beer and a whole heap of drink-friendly snacks.

Ooh Coffee

Anytime we visit Ooh, we start waxing lyrical about North Freo… The sun always seems to be shining, everyone’s just a bit more beautiful and carefree… And there, in the middle of it all, is Ooh Coffee. This petite espresso bar is pairing great coffee with easy breezy service that is perfectly suited to its chilled out surrounds.

Wild Bakery

One of our favourite bakeries, Wild is hitting home runs on more than just their funky, fermenty sourdough. Head into their new North Freo location and feast your eyes on their cabinet of treats – from tarts and pastries, babka, macarons and biscuits, to freshly baked pretzels, sausage rolls, pies and slices of pizza bigger than your head… We know where we’re heading this Sunday for lunch.

Mojos Bar

As far as WA music legacy venues go, Mojos would just about be top of the wozza. One of the few WA venues rocking live original music every single night of the week, it’s played host to some of the world’s best bands, some of the most intense games of pool out the back, and some of Fremantle’s most historic hootenannies.

Mrs Brown Bar

Mrs Brown has been North Freo’s go-to neighbourhood hang for over a decade now, and for good reason. Housed in an old Victorian terrace home on the lively Queen Vic strip, Mrs Brown exudes a homely charm and offers a range of craft beers, boutique wines and spirits, which the friendly and knowledgeable staff can happily talk you through. If you find yourself getting peckish, a cheeky burger and fries from Flipside next door is sure to satisfy.

North Freo Bowlo

Established back in 1957, the North Freo Bowlo has undergone a revitalisation in the last couple of years – with not just extensive renovations but new management by a local community group. Awaiting their liquor license, the group plans to create a vibrant community-minded hub at the club, introducing events and activations like outdoor movie nights, food trucks and more.

Bib & Tucker

Of course, this one really goes without saying. Bib and Tucker is a heavyweight when it comes to beachside dining in Perth. There’s no better place to watch the sunset with a few freshly shucked oysters or treat yourself to a breakfast of Exmouth prawn toast – particularly when paired with a cheeky breakfast martini made with house-made marmalade!

Palette

This North Freo gem may have only opened at the end of 2022, but it’s become the favourite for many a beach-going brunch-er. Dive into Palette’s menu of brunch staples (Turkish eggs, avo toast, a tempting porchetta benedict…) or grab a coffee for the road. Plus, make sure to keep your eyes peeled for any art you love on the walls – as their name would suggest, the cafe and restaurant doubles as a gallery space for emerging local artists.

The Black Truffle

After changing hands recently, North Freo’s local deli The Black Truffle has undergone a revamp – including the new addition of a night-time pizza service. While you can still pop in for a wholesome lunch on-the-go or to grab a pantry staple, you can also swing past until 9PM from Wednesday to Sunday for house-made pizza – plus, it’s BYO!

Bean Dream’n

North Freo might not be a huge suburb, but it contains multitudes! We’ve covered the hustle and bustle of Queen Victoria Street and the coastal chill towards Leighton – but there’s also a stunning stretch of the river to appreciate! Pop down to Gilbert Fraser Reserve and enjoy not just a relaxing paddle or picnic, but the coffee magic of Bean Dream’n. The coffee van is parked up at the end of Johannah Street most mornings, serving up delish coffees and even better vibes.
