The oldest inland town in Western Australia has been named one of Australia’s best Tiny Towns.

Just 90 minutes drive east of Perth, nestled on the Avon River sits York – it truly is one of WA’s premium tourist destinations.

It’s so good in fact, that Airbnb included the town in their new Tiny Towns Guide which features the top 50 places across the country with populations under 3,000 people.

York was placed fourth on the list and ranked so highly due to its appeal to history buffs, nature lovers and anyone looking to experience the charm of an historic Australian town.

The town is well known for its well-preserved historical architecture and visitors can take a walking tour to see the York Courthouse, the Old York Mill and St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

There’s also a unique collection of vintage cars and motorbikes to check out at York Motor Museum which is another great stop, especially for automotive and history enthusiasts.

The York Farmers’ Market was also a reason why the town ranked so highly as it has some of the best fresh produce, crafts and other local goods on offer.

Airbnb set out to make this list after YouGov research showed that nearly 80 percent of Aussies are interested in visiting a small town they’ve never been to before.

“Highlighting these tiny towns offers a great opportunity for Airbnb hosts to roll out their welcome mats and showcase the best of what their region has to offer,” Susan Wheeldon, Airbnb Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand said.

“This guide also helping give local businesses a boost thanks to the ripple effect of tourism dollars being spent in their community.”

To help boost tourism in regional communities, Airbnb has also contributed five $30,000 in grants to community organisations – one of which will be going to the upcoming York Festival, taking over the town during the September school holidays from Friday 20-Sunday 29 September.

Also in WA, Bremer Bay featured inside the top 10 of Airbnb’s Tiny Towns, and Kellerberrin, Shark Bay, Chapman Valley, Waroona, Grove Beach, and Cunderdin all made the top 50.
