Medieval charm meets Swiss chalet in this quirky handcrafted home
There’s something about certain homes that just send capture us in a moment – evoking past eras or films rattling around the back of our memories. And this quirky Kalamunda home has captured our imaginations more so than most, filled with unique touches and crafted with a bespoke attention to detail.
Let’s take a peek inside thanks to our pals at Crib Creative!
Perched atop the Darling scarp on a massive 2021sqm block, the home was believed to be completed in the early ’80s by a Dutch architect, before being purchased by the current owners, of Swiss heritage, in 1984.
The European influences are immediately obvious in that double-height grand room – not just with mammoth timber beams spanning the vaulted ceiling, but features like the huge fireplace with crested hood.
As well as that super-sized timber, we’re getting more than a smidge of medieval flair from the metal fixtures – not just above the bar here, but chains draped between beams or suspending hardware from the ceiling.

Combined with the home’s more retro features, it’s creating a fabulously camp quality that we adore – à la Hammer’s gothic horrors, we can delight in imagining Christopher Lee’s Prince of Darkness or a moustachioed Vincent Price peering out from the shadows…
The kitchen continues this rather medieval flair, and we can’t help but also appreciate not just its practicality but its impressive view – and while we love to extol the virtues of a washing-up view, we’d certainly rather enjoy the view from the pool or enjoying a sunset drink on one of the balconies!
In keeping with the mysterious vibes, there’s even a secret stairway that leads to a converted attic den! Just go through the leadlight doors, turn right at the ancient tapestry and sneak upstairs…
