Cute and oh-so-compact: North Perth’s Dollhouse is on the market

Sprawling mansions may be what we daydream about… But the transformation of a smaller block has all the hallmarks of a forever home.

Designed by award winning architecture and interior practice Aura Design Studio, Dollhouse 2.0 is nestled in that particularly lovely pocket of North Perth just south of Angove Street.

The distinctive cartoon-like exterior balances a whimsical approach with robust materiality – the pitched roofline and concrete bricks outlined by a graphic black steel border.

Enter through that vibrant yellow door and you’ll be in the heart of the home’s ground floor – a vast void extending above the dining area to the home’s full height, and bringing in swathes of sunlight from both the north and the east-facing windows.

(Glazing, incidentally, avoids the western face of the home – one of the thermally and environmentally efficient qualities of Dollhouse 2.0 that reduces the need for costly heating and cooling, alongside effective cross-ventilation.)

Either side of the dining room, the living and kitchen are tucked neatly under the home’s upper level. Flowing through to the ground floor’s bathroom and laundry, the kitchen in particular maximises every inch of space in the small footprint, while the living room harnesses the lower ceiling height for a more intimate sense of scale.

Although theoretically smaller in scale, the living area more than doubles in size when flowing out to the outdoor entertaining space – which, in turn, connects to the double garage to create a huge event space.

(This nifty space-shifting was a priority throughout the design of the home – alongside clever space-saving built-in storage to maximise the utility of every corner.)

Head back inside, and upstairs you’ll find the home’s three bedrooms – the largest of which boasts its own spacious north-facing balcony that overlooks the charming Persimmon Street. A smaller balcony adjoins the study, allowing plenty of fresh air and morning light for days spend working from home.
