Peek inside Kyilla House: a 1920s North Perth bungalow with an architectural update
Strolling through North Perth, the suburb’s charm can be in no small part be attributed to the prevalence of character bungalows dotted throughout the streets.
Taking its name from its position sitting kitty-corner to Kyilla Park on a prime corner block, ca. 1928 Californian bungalow Kyilla House was updated in 2013 by local firm Chindarsi Architects while maintaining the essence of the Interwar style – and it’s now on the market!
Past the original L-shaped verandah, the living room (which could also be utilised as a fourth bedroom) has retained those typical Art Deco features: leadlight windows, decorative moulding and exposed brick fireplace.
Similarly, the primary bedroom at the front of the home has retained some of the same features – we’re particularly charmed by the little leadlight windows above the bed – while gaining a slick new charcoal-hued ensuite.

At the transitional node between the original home and the newer extension completed in 2013, a cosy study nook has been neatly positioned to make use of any wasted space.
Opposite the addition’s kitchen, a wall of glass reveals a Zen-inspired courtyard complete with Japanese maple – the perfect view for a moment of meditation whilst cooking dinner.
The kitchen’s warm timber cabinetry counteracts the industrial edge of the polished concrete flooring and custom stainless steel bench – with even more timber panelling enveloping the adjoining living room, cladding the stairway that leads up to an additional bedroom and ensuite. Separate from the home’s other bedrooms, it makes the perfect retreat for teens or guests.
While Kyilla Park (and the fantastic Kyilla Community Farmers Market every Saturday!) is just across the road, the petite courtyard is perfectly proportioned for long summer evenings barbecuing with friends.
