This Barbie’s Dream House is totally not haunted!
You guys ever think about dying?
We normally wouldn’t entice you to look at a delightful newly on-the-market home with such a morbid opener, but when it so perfectly encapsulates the duality of Barbie’s pink-hued existential crisis… Well, it practically writes itself.
Embodying this dichotomy of saccharine melancholy is the stunning 3 Brook Street, York – we’re taking a peek inside thanks to our friends at Crib Creative.
Built in 1897 and designed by Chief Government architect George Temple-Poole, the Federation Arts and Craft building operated as York Hospital until the ’60s, when it was sold to the Methodist Church. Used as a school camp until 1976, the National Trust then purchased the home before it was acquired by the current owners 20 years ago.
Spread out over 5,687m², the grand main home is neighboured by three more residences – formerly the maternity hospital, matron’s residence and laundry building.
The main home is where we’re focusing our attention, though… And with a colour palette like this, you can understand why!
From the front door, you’re faced with the fantastically vivid pink that continues throughout almost the entire home. It’s striking impact is magnified by period features like the grand staircase, sweeping arches and stained glass windows.

Perhaps nowhere is as fantastically, floor-to-ceiling pink as the grand room. Occupying a huge space on the upper floor of the home, it channels an old-world elegance with a grand sense of scale, series of chandeliers and velvet-draped windows – as well as a Pepto Bismol-inspired sense of maximalism.
One level below, the living room is almost identical to the grand room above it – although reduced in scale for more casual family-oriented living.
Elsewhere, the pink has been scaled back to a much more delicate, soft hue – notably in the spacious main bedroom. And lest you worry, pink isn’t the only colour celebrated in this home! While the bathrooms and kitchen are a fresh and crisp white, you can be comfortably ensconced within the pistachio-green of the ground floor sitting room (or bedroom), or the plush green formal dining room.
