This stunning transformation of a 1908 worker’s cottage is on the city’s doorstep
A celebration of old and new, of sleek glass meeting rustic brick, of old-world charm on the doorstep of a growing city: Brisbane Terrace haven Veiled House has just hit the market.
Designed by local boutique building and interior design practice Juo, Veiled House is situated in that delightful, laneway-filled pocket between Northbridge and Highgate… Or Miller + Baker territory, as we like to call it.
Like plenty of its neighbours, the original home is a 1908 worker’s cottage – although years of haphazard additions made a significant updates necessary.
At the front, the original cottage has been painstakingly restored to its former glory, with wide jarrah floorboards, heigh ceilings and charming fireplaces.
The primary bedroom (one of the home’s total of five bedrooms) sits at the front of the home and overlooks the white picket fenced garden, while an ensuite and bathroom sit neatly tucked behind and make use of character details.
The transition between the old and new is satisfyingly abrupt as you walk through a glass-enclosed walkway to the open plan living, dining and kitchen at the rear of the home.
The narrow void between has been filled with lush greenery, the walls of glass presenting the foliage and rustic red brick like an immersive museum display.
Where one wall of glass looks to the original cottage’s form, an opposite wall of glass looks to the enclosed courtyard and through to the garage. (The garage structure is also where you’ll find the sleek laundry space.)

Atop the garage? A leafy, verdant crown! Insulating the garage below and providing a home for wildlife, the lush rooftop garden utilises native flora and was designed by horticulturalist Gavin Hicks.
Overlooking this rooftop garden is the second floor of the home’s contemporary extension, with three more bedrooms neatly stacked in a row – plenty of room for visitors and growing families alike.
