The time is nearly upon us to pack up our outdoor activities and head inside for the colder weather, but that doesn’t mean you have to pack up your excitement for fun fitness workouts – in fact, it’s quite the opposite.

We’ve put together a list of fun and unusual fitness classes to get you up and about over the cooler months, and who knows you might even learn an impressive trick that you can whip out at parties.

Pole Dancing

With pole gyms popping up across every inch of the city, this increasingly-popular sport will have you spinning, twirling, and hanging in some difficult (and sometimes painful) positions, but after some practice you’ll grow to love the addictive feeling of twirling through the air, along with the health and fitness benefits that come with it. There’s plenty to pick from around Perth, including Flying High Aerial Arts Studios, Bobbi’s Pole Studio, The Emerald Pole Boutique, SheMoves and Core Fusion Pilates & Pole, run by a 3x World Pole Champion in a huge custom-built space in Canning Vale.

Zumba

You’d have to live under a rock to have not heard of Zumba. Taught globally across 180 countries, Zumba is one of the most popular on this list and if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Combining Latin dance choreography with fun repetitive movements to keep the heart pumping, Zumba is essentially a vigorous dance class performed to funky Latin music. Gather your funnest friends, hit up a class and feel your body and mind relax as you give yourself over to the groovy beat. Beatty Park Leisure Centre runs a couple each week, including Aqua Zumba!

Ballet

As we know dancing is incredibly beneficial to general health and fitness, but did you know it can also have a super positive impact on cognitive skills, brain density, balance and coordination. And if you’re serious about all the above, why not get into ballet? You may not realise it but there are plenty of ballet classes to partake in around Perth that are for people of all skill levels, including if you’ve never done it before! Plus, it really doesn’t matter what age you start at, as many adult students will find it an awesome way to learn new skills, relieve stress and meet new people. Perth School of Ballet offers ballet and body conditioning classes each week, while West Australian Ballet (pictured below), Jody Marshall Dance Company and The WA Performance School do likewise.

Burlesque

This addition is perfect for those more daring who want to release all inhibitions and allow their sexy side to come out and play. While burlesque originated in Victorian England, the sensual performance that we recognise today found its footing in America and has gained increasing popularity in the last decade. Feathers, heels, sparkling outfits, and sexy moves draw you in, but it’s the freedom and fun times that keep you excited and coming back for more. Perth’s sparkling burlesque studios are the perfect way to stay fit while feeling fabulous and invite you whether you’re tackling a class alone or with a group of friends. Lady Velvet Cabaret, Sugar Blue Burlesque and Miss Lady Lace are all great start points to get into burlesque around Perth.

Circus

Circus classes typically spread across silks, trapeze, aerials, contortion and lyra (aerial hoop) and depending on the studio you might also learn the likes of juggling, unicycle and tumbling classes to give you a more rounded circus experience. Want to fly through the sky while contorting your body like a pretzel? Don’t worry, there are classes for that. With these unusual classes gaining popularity between adults and children alike, there’s never been a better time to run away with the circus. The Circus Centre, CirQuest Circus and Perth Circus Dance Academy offer classes for all ages and skill levels.

Hula Hoops

Offered across two different classes, Hooopfit and Hoopdance, hooping has never been so fun. Hoopfit incorporates hooping into a full body workout, targeting abs, biceps, and traps, while hoopdance teaches choreographed routines and tricks. Jump in a class to learn fun tricks, build endurance, or just simply mess around with a hoop. Happy Healthy Hoops in Duncraig is your best bet, while SheMoves also offer lyra classes to keep you spinning.

Bungee Fitness

Bungee fitness is something may never heard of, but offers an experience you won’t ever forget, combining yoga and dancing with a bungee cord. The safety of the bungee cord suspends your fall as you go through vigorous choreography, and these classes will make you feel like you’re flying while strengthening your core and improving stamina. Created to improve mobility and endurance, the resistance weight of the bungee band can be altered to account for individual strength. Head to the Empowered Centre for more information on getting into bungee fitness in Perth.

Archery

Archery is an ancient sport that teaches precision, power, and patience through the practice of shooting arrows at a target. An esteemed Olympic sport, archery attracts people of all ages and sizes as a way to improve focus, self-confidence and hand-eye coordination. Plus shooting a bow and arrow is also just super cool! Indoor and outdoor archery studios are available all over Perth, including Indoor Archery WA, Hoddywell Archery Park, Archery Park Whiteman and Swan Valley Adventure Centre.

Ninja Academy

With a handful of ninja gyms spread out across the city, classes range from handstands, parkour and climbing to acroyoga and ninja 101. Similarly, some gyms offer element classes spanning across water, earth and fire which are targeted at developing strength, mobility, and endurance. There’s plenty to choose from in Perth, although it’s hard to go past the Ninja Academy in Osborne Park.
