Perth’s best public golf courses
Once the domain of gentlemen pros and nobody else, golf is a sport that’s becoming popular amongst people of all ages and skill levels.
And it’s not hard to see why, with our ever-growing desire to get outside into the fresh air, clock off from the digital world and get active, golf is becoming a great and more inclusive option to do all these things and more.
Fortunately for us, Perth and its surrounds are filled with some of this country’s best golf courses, and here’s a few to keep you busy:
The Vines
We’ll kick this list off with arguably Perth’s most famous course – The Vines. Nestled in the spectacular Swan Valley wine region and surrounded by nature (watch out for some very casual kangaroos), you’ve got two 18-hole courses to choose from – The Lakes and Ellenbrook. Both are of a championship level, with plenty of traps to keep you busy. Given its championship status it’s surprisingly affordable, starting at $35 for 9 holes although at different times of the year they also run some great package deals, perfect for making a day of it with your pals.
Verdelho Drive, The Vines
Wembley Golf Course
Wembley Golf Course proclaims to be Australia’s best public golf course, and to be fair it’s pretty hard to argue. 36 holes, a huge two-story automated driving range with spectacular city views, an epic mini golf course (perfect for date night) and a stellar 19th hole (bar and restaurant), it’s got something for every level of golfer. It’s also only a pitching wedge from the city centre, so you’ve really got no excuse.

Araluen Golf Resort
Nestled amongst the Roleystone Hills 40kms south east of the city, Araluen Golf Resort would have to be one of Australia’s most picturesque courses – seriously, you’d just be stoked to go for a walk around its lush 18 holes. Dodging native Australia wild life, it can be a tricky course for those just starting out, but totally worth your time just for the adventure. Wait til you see their signature #16 Par 3.
Country Club Ave, Roleystone
Carramar
At 40 minutes north of the city, Carramar is a little further out but more than worth the drive. It’s a public course but truly does feel like you’re playing on a resort-level standard, which also means it’s a little more difficult than your average 18. Doesn’t mean you can’t have a lot of fun though – just don’t get too caught up on on the fifth AKA “Heartbreak Hill”.

Collier Park
Collier Park, just 10 minutes out of the CBD across from Curtin University, is one of Perth’s best value and most diverse courses. With three individual nine-hole courses each providing their own challenges, they’ve got a huge driving range and a great team of professionals ready to get your golf game going no matter what level you’re at.
Hayman Rd, Como
Maylands Peninsula Golf Course
Set against epic views of Perth City and Optus Stadium, Maylands golf course is another central gem. Nice and flat, with gentle undulations and a bunch of lakes, don’t let the lack of hills fool you into thinking it’s a cakewalk. Their green fees are also fantastically priced.

Secret Harbour Golf Links
For those looking to get coastal and a little further out of the big smoke, Secret Harbour Golf Links is amongst the 25 best public courses in Australia. You’ll also feel like a real old school golfer, with the course based on traditional Scottish courses. They do a great signature package that includes 18 holes, a motorised cart and brasserie lunch. If you’re keen to head a little further south to Mandurah, Meadow Springs Golf Club, Mandurah Country Club and The Cut are fantastic options as well.

Hillview Golf Course
Like Collier, if you’re chasing a bit of variety then head to High Wycombe and enjoy the excellent 27-hole golf course at Hillview. It’s also a great spot if you’re organising a larger corporate or charity day, and the sports bar serves up a mean steak sanga.

Whaleback Golf Course
A quick 20-minute trip out of the CBD in Parkwood, Whaleback has been a Perth staple for decades. Like Wembley it too features a two-story day/night driving range, and if you want to get real deep into your game it has the TopTracer Range analyser. What it lacks in style it makes up for in price, and if you fancy a quick hit before sundown their twilight sessions are ridiculously cheap.

Point Walter Golf Course
If 18 holes feels a little daunting for you, don’t worry because Perth also has some great shorter options too, including Point Walter Golf Course. Tracking along our iconic Swan River, the views are some of the best you’ll find in Perth, and it’s a challenging-yet-fun nine holes that you can play twice with different tee positions. They’ve also got an epic mini golf course so everyone can get involved!
Honour Ave, Bicton
Lancelin Golf Club
This one’s more of a day trip option, but after spending the morning fishing or surfing up in Lancelin, why not hit the greens at Lancelin Golf Club? As relaxed as the coastal locale in which it resides, they’re more than happy for you to just turn up and go for a hit. There’s only nine greens, but you can play it as 18 holes and both options only cost $20.

The Springs Club Armadale
Another very tidy little 9-hole golf course, The Springs Club in Armadale underwent some serious rennos in recent years and it shows. The course itself is a lot of fun and not crazy-challenging (you won’t find too many bunkers or water hazards), but watch out for those greens – they’ll get ya.

Hamersley Public Golf Course
A short trip north of the city, Hamersley Public Golf Course in Karrinyup is a great one for those with a higher handicap. Excellent value, especially during the week (and if you’re splashing a concession card around), it’s long, winding fairways make for the perfect midweek escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. Pro tip: Always hit one club higher than normal on the Par 3 7th, otherwise you’ll be rolling back down the hill every. single. time.
