Meet Geraldton’s Local Doers: Julian Canny from Euphorium
We like to bang on about how great (or rather, OK!) Perth is – but our greatness doesn’t just happen out of nowhere!
With a mission to create thriving, connected and empowered communities, Town Team Movement is all about “doers”.
We’re partnering up with Town Team Movement so we can shine a light on some of the people who help make our communities so unique, and just a few of the excellent initiatives they’re working on.
This week, we’re featuring Julian Canny, one of the brains behind Euphorium, a Geraldton-based organisation that works closely with Town Teams across the Midwest.
Julian, could you encapsulate who you are in three sentences?
Sure. I’m Julian Canny, affiliated with Euphorium, an organisation collaborating with Midwest Town Teams. My passion lies in empowering communities through activation initiatives.
What does place activation mean to you?
Place activation involves reclaiming communal spaces, emphasising individuals’ inherent rights to engage with and shape their community environments.
Could you share an example of a place activation project you’re proud of?
Certainly. While we’ve tackled various projects, one standout was constructing a vibrant box city in Geraldton’s town square using donated cardboard boxes. Simplicity often yields the most impactful results.
How can towns enhance their resilience?
True resilience stems from collective identity and creativity. Fostering community cohesion and providing platforms for creative expression empowers towns to navigate challenges effectively.
What challenges might towns face in pursuing activation?
Often, solving one issue unveils another. Instead of aiming for a problem-free future, communities should proactively address challenges aligned with their shared vision, fostering unity and forward-thinking.

Witnessing the transformative power of collective action fuels my commitment. By fostering interdependence and collaboration, communities can unlock their full potential.
Could you share your guiding principle when working with towns?
We urge communities to challenge the status quo with courage and curiosity. Embracing curiosity without judgment allows for meaningful dialogue and personal growth, laying the foundation for positive community change. Ultimately, change starts from within, with each individual embodying the values they hope to see reflected in their community.
