After eight finalists competed in a cook-off in front of a live audience at the AHA Hospitality Expo, North West Brewing Co in Karratha won the country WA competition, while Canning Vale’s the Last Local took out the Perth comp.
“For 15 years, WA chefs have been raising the bar when it comes to creating incredible steak sandwiches and this year we saw kitchens across the state deliver some incredible versions of what is a truly classic pub meal,” said AHA(WA) CEO Bradley Woods. “The competition continues to grow as result of the strong support it receives from the WA community, who cast many thousands of votes throughout the month of May.”
Last Local Chef Mickey Phull took top honours with a Chicago-inspired French dip steak sandwich containing beef short rib, melted cheese, caramelised onions, sour cream, horseradish sauce and slaw:
Meanwhile Chef Ats Johanson flew down from Karratha to represent North West Brewing Co, appearing in the finals for the first time ever and winning thanks to a coffee-infused Black Angus steak, whisky onion jam, Swiss cheese, bacon and iceberg lettuce on Turkish Bread – that’s the one in the header of the article!
The overall winner will be announced for 2022 at the AHA Hospitality Awards For Excellence on November 7.
