We’ll be honest – we were today years old when we found out there was a massive competition for Australia’s best pies called The Great Aussie Pie Comp.

Talk about legit though – after being established in 1989 by John Ross and Craig Perry, it’s gone from strength to strength over the decades, now known as the Official Great Aussie Pie Competition, and this year’s winners have just been crowned.

There’s a huge array of categories, including Overall Gourmet Pie, Plain Sausage Roll, Poultry Pie and Brekkie Pie to name but a small few, however as far as we’re concerned top of the wozza surely has to be Best Meat Pie In Australia.

And WA’s own Pinjarra Bakery has taken out that award for their beloved Chunky Steak Pie, beating out fellow West Aussies Jack’s Bakery and Miami Bakehouse (who did take out best Red Meat Pie for their New York Ruben), along with Rolling Pin Pies & Cakes in Ocean Grove and Country Cobb Bakery in Springvale, both from Victoria.

In more good news for Pinjarra Bakery, Apprentice Chefs Rose Lockyer received a gold commendation for her Chicken Leek & white wine, while Samantha Warner took home bronze for her Chicken Leek and Truffle Pie.

Toodyay Bakery also scored top honours for their Apple Cinnamon Pie in Best Apple Pie, while other WA-based bakeries that narrowly missed out on top gongs were Highlands Bakery, Midlands (Best Sausage Roll;) and Four Seasons Patisserie & Bakery, Wycombe (Poultry Pie).
