While the fire that destroyed up to 8000 hectares of forest down south last week has been contained, its effects will be felt for years with some more immediate than others.

The ABC reported yesterday that a large section of important tourist driving route Caves Road will be closed for the foreseeable future as repairs commence following fire impacts.

A section between Redgate Road and Bushby Road was the worst affected, and remains closed after several culverts (water channels under the road) were damaged, along with fallen trees crushing the roads surface.

Residents have been using alternative routes to return to their properties, but authorities are asking tourists to avoid the fire damaged sections of the road.

However, tourists are still being encouraged to make their planned trips south, just be wary of the major fire damaged areas.
