FREO, way to go! Jeez with their footy team going gangbusters in the AFL and now TIME Magazine citing Fremantle as one of only two Australian cities in their Top 50 World’s Greatest Places in 2022, all this fame and fortune might start going to our southern friends’ heads!

We jest (somewhat), but bring named alongside the likes of Valencia, Toronto and even the International Space Station as one of the world’s Top 50 Greatest Places by TIME magazine ain’t a bad feather to add to the cap for ye olde Fremantle.

As we were only talking about a couple of weeks ago, Fremantle is back in a big way in 2022, and it appears TIME Magazine would agree, saying:

“After nearly 700 days of pandemic shutdown, the Australian port city of Fremantle is bustling with food and drink openings. The reimagined city center, Walyalup Koort, is part of a $270 million renewal project—the largest of its kind in the area’s history. (Walyalup is the Nyoongar name for the region, and Koort means heart.)”

“The district includes ironically named FOMO’s hawker-style food stalls serving pho, ramen, kebabs, burgers, and even fried ice cream, and Funlab offers an array of, well, fun: bowling, mini-golf, arcade games, and cocktails.”

It goes on to shoutout the new Old Courthouse, Jetty Bar & Eats and Gage Roads massive new brewpub as exciting new additions to the area.

The only other region of Australia that copped a mention was the Great Barrier Reef, and we can probably all agree there’s no argument there.

In compiling the list, TIME Magazine said they “solicited nominations of places from our international network of correspondents and contributors, with an eye toward those offering new and exciting experiences.”

And Freo hitting the list ain’t a bad shout, if you ask us.

persistent as the challenges of life in 2022 is the hope that understanding and human connection can be found through travel. So, with much of the global population now vaccinated against COVID-19, world travelers are again hitting the road—and the skies. The hospitality industry is reopening and excited to safely welcome them and revitalize local communities.

To compile this list of the World’s Greatest Places, the top spots to visit this year, TIME solicited nominations of places from our international network of correspondents and contributors, with an eye toward those offering new and exciting experiences.
